‭Tessellation Printing Guide‬

‭Materials-‬
‭-‬ ‭Carved linoleum block‬ ‭-‬ ‭Ink‬
‭-‬ ‭Final paper, gridded out‬ ‭-‬ ‭Pallet knife‬
‭-‬ ‭Brayer (roller)‬ ‭-‬ ‭Barren‬
‭-‬ ‭Inking plate‬

‭Inking your plate-‬

‭1.‬ ‭Using the pallet knife, apply a small bead of ink at the top of the inking plate.‬
‭2.‬ ‭Use the brayer to roll the ink across the entire plate, lifting with each pass to‬
‭ensure the entire brayer is coated with ink.‬
‭The texture of the ink should look comparable to skin‬
‭You should be able to hear a crackling noise almost like velcro pulling‬
‭apart‬

‭Printing-‬
‭1.‬ ‭Apply ink to the top of the linoleum block. You should take multiple passes to‬
‭ensure the entire design has an even layer of ink.‬
‭Tip: Before printing on your final paper, make a test print to ensure you‬
‭have an adequate layer of ink applied.‬
‭2.‬ ‭Place the inked block facedown in one of your gridded squares.‬
‭Tip: It helps if you draw a diagonal line of symmetry across the back of‬
‭your lino block. Mark the top and bottom of this line in order to ensure that‬
‭you are placing your block in the correct rotation.‬
‭3.‬ ‭Carefully flip both the block and the paper over. Ensure that you do not move the‬
‭block. This will smudge your design.‬
‭4.‬ ‭Using medium pressure, rud the barren across the back of the paper just on top‬
‭of the block. Make sure that you have gone across all of the edges as well.‬
‭5.‬ ‭Pull the paper away from the linoleum. Your design should be revealed!‬
‭6.‬ ‭Continue steps 1-5 until your entire paper is covered.‬
‭Tip: Apply another small bead of ink to the inking plate after every 2-3‬
‭prints.‬
‭Clean up-‬
‭1.‬ ‭On a test sheet of paper, stamp as much ink as possible off of your linoleum‬
‭block. Rub any excess ink off with a paper towel before wrapping the entire block‬
‭in a paper towel.‬
‭2.‬ ‭In the sink, use a wet sponge to clean all ink off of the dirty pallet knife, brayer,‬
‭and inking plate.‬
‭3.‬ ‭Place the lid on the ink and screw in place.‬
‭4.‬ ‭Wipe all wet materials down with a paper towel and place back where you found‬
‭them.‬
