The French Revolution

Historical events have had a huge impact in modern society but not many of them like the
French Revolution. (0) began in 1789 and lasted for ten years, was a world-changing
event that not only redefined the politics and society of France but also had far-reaching
influence
on the (56) of many other countries in the world. The main causes of the revolution
were that the French king (57) ruled as absolute monarch, with very (58)
restrictions on his power, and because a feudal system of land ownership put the peasants
(59) worked the land completely under the control of the aristocracy who owned it.
Furthermore, costly wars had bankrupted the French government, the king was regarded as
(60) and ineffectual, and a combination of bad harvests and rising prices in the 1780s caused
hardship among ordinary French people. The Storming of the Bastille in July 1789, (61)
the people took control of this fortress and political prison in Paris, is (62) by many as the
single event that started the French Revolution. In 1793, the French
king was executed and the monarchy was (63) , beginning a
dark and bloody period of the revolution known as The Terror, when
thousands of aristocrats and political enemies of the increasingly
extremist leaders of the revolution were executed. (64) the
brutality of The Terror, the basic (65) that inspired the French
Revolution – liberty, freedom, and equal rights for all people – influenced
the constitutions of many other countries, including the
United States, and these principles are today widely accepted as providing
the foundations of a fair society.
