The following marking criteria and evaluation scales will help you mark the speaking tasks consistently
and give students meaningful feedback.
Marking criteria
• 0–4 marks for the range of language used (structures and vocabulary).
• 0–2 marks for accuracy of expression.
• 0–2 marks for fluency.
• 0–2 marks for pronunciation.
Placement Test
Ask each student the questions below. One word answers can be accepted, but students should be
encouraged to answer in chunks of language. If a child is unable to answer a question, e.g. What’s this?
[pointing to the chair], help the child by asking Is it a table or a chair? (chair) Yes, very good. It’s a chair.
