OWN MULTIPLE HOLSTERS

One serious consideration with re-
gard to holster selection is how easy
the holster is to put on or take off.
To the novice concealed carrier, this
might not seem important, but it
won’t be long until you realize there
are times you need to take your gun
off for a short time, and having to
undo your belt to make that happen
isn’t ideal.
I’ve been working with a Glock 43
a bit, and two holsters I’ve been using
make this process seamless. The first
is the Galco Royal Guard, an inside
the waistband (IWB) holster. The two
exterior straps are easy to undo, and
the holster can simply be pulled out
of the pants. It’s just as easy to put
back on as well—and you never have
to unfasten your belt. Well … you
might need to tighten or loosen it for
comfort.
The other is the Galco paddle hol-
ster. Paddle holsters sandwich the
belt and pants between the holster
and a paddle that fits on the inside
of the pants. They’re incredibly

I recently got a chance to see precisely
how useful code words can be during a
shoot-house training session. Another
class member was taken hostage and
his partner, Gunsite Instructor Mario
Marchman, had already drawn his blue
gun. As everyone was shouting at each
other, Mario said, “We are gonna figure
this out, Mario.” On cue, the hostage
dropped like a sack of bricks.
You see, the pair had worked out be-
fore that if they used their name to refer
to the other, that was the signal to en-
gage the wet-noodle defense. That slick
little maneuver would’ve likely saved the
hostage’s life.

like the Ruger series of semi-autos. The
reason for this recommendation is two-
fold. First, for the most part, doctrine
across the United States amongst the
instructor cadre is that if you use a .22
LR, shoot for the head. And, you must
hit the soft parts of the head (eyes and
temple area). You need to get that small
bullet inside the cranium where it can
do its job disrupting the central nervous
system. Having to wait for the person
to collapse from internal bleeding isn’t
likely a successful strategy, if he’s bent
on killing you. Patricia was lucky.
Also important is the psychological
factor when facing a criminal suspect.
If the person cannot even see the gun
in your hand, they’ll likely not be im-
pressed. But a stainless or blued gun,
which looks like a .357 Mag. or 9mm,

New shooters often
struggle learning how to properly
place their finger on the trigger. It
won’t be exactly the same for ev-
eryone, because everyone’s fingers
and hands are different.
However, in general, the face
of the trigger should contact the
trigger finger on the finger pad, just 01
past the last joint, and then press
should occur straight back. The
shooter must learn to do this by
increasing the tension of the finger
on the trigger, without increasing
the tension of other fingers or their
hand on the rest of the pistol.
Often a poor trigger pull can be
traced to a finger that’s not placed
properly. If you have too much
finger on the trigger and you’re a
right-handed shooter, it’ll likely
pull the gun to the right. (If you’re 02
left-handed, it’ll pull the gun to the
left.) If you don’t have enough finger
on the trigger, it’ll tend to push the
gun to the left, and, of course, the
opposite for left-handed shooters.
You can easily see if you have too
much or too little finger on the trig-
ger when dry practicing. Watch the
sights as you very slowly start to
apply pressure to the trigger.
Maybe the most important

when the proper sight alignment and
sight picture are obtained. The cor-
rect trigger pull shouldn’t have to be
thought through; it should just occur.
How might the correct trigger pull
be described? You could correlate it
to attempting to scrape excess peanut
butter from the trigger of a mouse trap
that has been set. You could compare
it to trying to remove a splinter with
a needle, or maybe gently inserting a
contact lens. Or, you could just say that
a trigger should be pressed in a manner
that won’t cause the handgun to move.
It’s very easy to explain how to pull a
trigger; it’s not so easy for the student
to understand it. Particularly to under-

Violence in America is an everyday issue, and
no one is immune. According to the National As-
sociation of Security Professionals (NASP), the
total number of reported homicides in the U.S. is
about 15,500 per year, but adjusted for unreport-

that figure. The same goes for other crimes,
which are often grossly under-reported for a
number of reasons.
Violence in the workplace mirrors the situ-

reports 1,000 workplace homicides per year, but
that does not include a huge number committed
