This is me in my kitchen on Monday morning.

Look at
it! It’s a terrible mess, isn’t it? It’s not really my fault.
The kids came home for the weekend. Jack, aged 24
and Peter aged 22, with three friends. They ate
everything in the fridge, used every pot and pan in the
kitchen and left me with this. I haven’t even looked at
the bedrooms yet. I’m thinking about what to do, while
reading my magazine. In my magazine, everything is
perfect. Beautiful living rooms; clean and tidy
kitchens. Meanwhile, back in the real world, all around
me there is devastation. The sink is full of dirty
dishes, the cooker is dirty, the grill is caked in fat,
the bin is full and overflowing, the floor needs
mopping… If I close my eyes, I can just imagine I am
in one of these beautiful rooms in my magazine. I’m
sipping on my lemonade, pretending it’s Champagne. I’m
almost there… Look, enough! I can’t put it off any
longer. I’ll have to start on this mess. Oh, here’s an
adverts page. ‘Cleaner available £12 an hour’. That’s
not a bad rate. Oh, she lives near me! Right, where’s
