1. Show that the map from T S n × R to S n × Rn+1 defined by F ((z, v), λ) = (z, v + λz) is
a diffeomorphism (recall that Tx S n = {v ∈ Rn+1 : v · x = 0}).
2. Let f ∈ C ∞ (M, N ). A local section of f is a smooth map σ : U → M defined on an
open subset U of N such that f ◦ σ = idU . Prove that f is a submersion if and only if
every point x ∈ M is contained in the image of a local section of f . Find local sections for
the projection π : Rn+1 \ {0} → CPn .
3. A function f from a manifold M to another manifold N is called proper if K ⊂ N
compact implies f −1 (K) ⊂ M compact. Find a proper embedding from {x ∈ R2 : 1 <
|x| < 2} to R3 .
4. On the sphere S n ⊂ Rn × R ' Rn+1 , show that the two stereographic projection maps
x
ϕ± (x, y) = 1±y define a smooth atlas for S n . Show that the differentiable structure defined
by this atlas is the same as the one defined by the inclusion of S n as a submanifold in Rn+1 .
5. A function F : Rn \ {0} → Rk \ {0} is homogeneous of degree α ∈ R if
F (λx) = λ|λ|α−1 F (x)
for all x ∈ Rn \{0} and λ ∈ R\{0}. Show that if n, k ≥ 2 and F is smooth and homogeneous
of degree α, then the map F̃ : RPn−1 → RPk−1 defined by F̃ ([x]) = [F (x)] is well-defined
and smooth.
6. Show that T S 1 is diffeomorphic to S 1 × R.
7. Show that the set of unit length tangent vectors to points in S 2 is a manifold of
dimension 3 which is diffeomorphic to SO(3).
