Professional Documents
Culture Documents
A cover letter is a document sent alongside your CV when applying for jobs. It
acts as a personal introduction and helps to sell your application. A cover
letter is necessary as it gives you the chance to explain to an employer why
you're the best candidate for the job. You do this by highlighting relevant skills
and experience; therefore you should always write your cover letter with the
position you're applying for in mind.
Not to be confused with personal statements for your CV, cover letters should complement your CV
but not duplicate it. The general consensus among recruiters when it comes to the length of these
documents is the shorter the better. Typically three to five short paragraphs, cover letters should not
exceed one A4 page.
Applicant_ employee
Keep your cover letter brief, while making sure it emphasizes your suitability for the job. It can be
broken down into the following sections:
• First paragraph
- The opening statement should set out why you're writing the letter. Begin by stating the
position you're applying for, where you saw it advertised, and when you are available to
start.
• Second paragraph
- Cover why you're suitable for the job, what attracted you to this type of work, why
you're interested in working for the company, and what you can offer the organization.
• Third paragraph
- Highlight relevant experience and demonstrate how your skills match the specific
requirements of the job description. Summarise any additional strengths and explain how
these could benefit the company.
• Last paragraph
- Use the closing paragraph to round up your letter. Reiterate your interest in the role and
indicate your desire for a personal interview. Now is the time to mention any unavailable
dates. Finish by thanking the employer and say how you are looking forward to receiving a
response.
TIPS:
A cover letter demonstrates to recruiters how well you express yourself so you need to make sure
that you don't just repeat your CV or give rambling explanations. Instead use this opportunity to
focus on your skills and experience, saving your qualifications for your CV.

Dear Mr Smith
I would like to apply for the logistics track of your graduate training scheme, advertised on the
Prospects.ac.uk website. As requested, I am enclosing my CV.
I am in the final year of my geography degree, expecting a 2:1. Always intending to have a career in
business, I have taken modules on the geography of business and GIS modelling. My final-year
dissertation is on changing patterns in retail. During my degree, I have developed my analytical skills
and ability to read, manage, and present data. I have also become familiar with a range of business
intelligence sources.
• Retail - moving from shelf stacker to checkout operator to team leader in my two years with
Fresh Foods. I contributed to the store consistently being in the top five for the region by
providing excellent customer service.
• Warehouse operations - picking and packing to meet targets over the busy Christmas period.
I have also:
• Worked in and led teams at Fresh Foods, on course projects and in sports.
• Communicated with colleagues at all levels in retail and warehousing.
• Solved problems as a team leader, ensuring staff cover and dealing with customer
complaints.
• Worked flexibly doing both early and late shifts and covering for absence, sometimes at short
notice.
• Managed my time when combining study with work and sport.
Yours sincerely

My organizational and communication skills are well demonstrated in my
work experiences in non profit, corporate and student organization settings.
Currently, I intern with Piedmont Council of the Arts which shares similar
responsibilities to the position at MWA. During my internship, I provide
administrative support, focusing on maintaining a contact database of local artists,
creating a new filing system for the council and constructing e-mail campaigns. I
have also interned at KPMG Audit Form, a corporate environment where
attention to detail was essential when managing client files and proof reading
financial statements. In addition, I handled event logistics and publicized events
when I served as publicity chair of the Taiwanese Student Association at U.Va. I
have acquired a sophisticated understanding of urban affairs through my studies.
My coursework included site assessment and data collection, application of
planning regulations, and the development of recommendations in order to
create neighborhood master plan and transportation plan. Originally from
Taiwan, my residence in Germany, France and the United States, as well as my
extensive travel experience have fostered an ease in working with people from
diverse backgrounds.

How long should a CV be?
A standard CV in the UK should be no longer than two sides of A4. Take a look at our example of a
chronological CV for inspiration.
To save space only include the main points of your education and experience. Stick to relevant
information and don't repeat what you've said in your cover letter.
As a recent graduate your CV may only take up one page and that's ok. Some medical or academic
CVs may be longer depending on your experience.
What to include in a CV
• Contact details - Include your full name, home address, mobile number and email address.
Unless you're applying for an acting or modelling job you don't need to include your date of
birth or a photograph.
• Profile - A CV profile is a concise statement that highlights your key attributes and helps you
stand out from the crowd. Usually placed at the beginning of the CV it picks out a few
relevant achievements and skills, while expressing your career aims. A good CV profile
focuses on the sector you're applying to, as your cover letter will be job-specific. Keep CV
personal statements short and snappy - 100 words is the perfect length. Discover how to
write a personal statement for your CV.
• Education - List and date all previous education, including professional qualifications. Place
the most recent first. Include specific modules only where relevant.
• Work experience - List your experience in reverse date order, making sure that anything you
mention is relevant to the job you're applying for. If you have plenty of relevant work
experience, this section should come before education.
• Skills and achievements - This is where you talk about the foreign languages you speak and
the IT packages you can competently use. The key skills that you list should be relevant to the
job. Don't exaggerate your abilities, as you'll need to back up your claims at interview. If
you've got lots of job-specific skills you should do a skills-based CV.
• Interests - 'Socialising', 'going to the cinema' and 'reading' aren't going to catch a recruiters
attention. However, relevant interests can provide a more complete picture of who you are,
as well as giving you something to talk about at interview. Examples include writing your own
blog if you want to be a journalist, or being part of a drama group if you're looking to get into
sales.
• References - You don't need to provide the names of referees at this stage. You also don't
need to say 'references available upon request' as most employers would assume this to be
the case.
CV format
• Avoid fonts such as Comic Sans. Choose something professional, clear and easy to read such
Arial or Times New Roman. Use a font size between 10 and 12 to make sure that potential
employers can read your CV. Ensure all fonts and font sizes are consistent throughout.
• Section headings are a good way to break up your CV. Ensure they stand out by making them
larger (font size 14 or 16) and bold.
• List everything in reverse chronological order so the recruiter sees your work history and
most recent achievements first.
• Keep it concise by using clear spacing and bullet points. This type of CV layout allows
potential employers to skim your CV and quickly pick out important information first.
• If you're posting your CV, print it on white A4 paper. Only print on one side and don't fold
your CV - you don't want it to arrive creased.
• Use active verbs when possible. For example, include words like 'created', 'analysed' and
'devised' to present yourself as a person who shows initiative.
8
• A good CV doesn't have any spelling or grammar mistakes. Use a spell checker and enlist a
second pair of eyes to check over the document.
• Avoid generic, over-used phrases such as 'team player', 'hardworking' and 'multitasker'.
Instead, provide real-life examples that demonstrate all of these skills.
• Tailor you CV. Look at the company's website and social media accounts, look to see if
they've recently been mentioned in the local press and use the job advert to make sure your
CV is targeted to the role and employer.
• Create the right type of CV for your circumstances. Decide whether the chronological, skills-
based or academic CV is right for you.
• Don't put the term 'curriculum vitae' at the top of the page.
• Make sure your email address sounds professional. If your personal address is inappropriate
create a new account for professional use.
• Don't lie or exaggerate on your CV or job application. Not only will you demonstrate your
dishonesty to a potential employer, but there can be serious consequences too. For example,
altering your degree grade from a 2:2 to a 2:1 is classed as degree fraud and can result in a
prison sentence. Take a look at this advice and guidance on degree fraud for students.
• If posting your CV online don't include your home address, as you could be targeted by
fraudsters.
• You should always include a cover letter unless the employer states otherwise. It will enable
you to personalise your application. You can draw attention to a particular part of your CV,
disclose a disability or clarify gaps in your work history. Find out how to write a persuasive
cover letter.

I started Math Buzz so younger pupils could enjoy and succeed at maths. I had to

reported that pupils were achieving more in class as a result of the club.
