TEST REPORT FOR K-FLEX GULF MANUFACTURING LLC
Report No.: 104493389SAT-010
Date: May 18, 2021
SECTION 6
TEST PROCEDURE
This report describes the results of testing conducted in accordance with ASTM E84-20,
Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials. The test method
is for comparative surface burning behavior of building materials by determining a flame spread
index (FSI) and a smoke developed index (SDI). This test is generally applicable to exposed
surfaces, such as finish materials for ceilings or walls, provided that the material or assembly of
materials, by its own structural quality or the manner in which it is tested and intended for use,
is capable of supporting itself in position or being supported during the test period.
“The use of supporting materials on the underside of the test specimen has the
ability to lower the flame spread index from those which might be obtained if
the specimen could be tested without such support. These test results do not
necessarily relate to indices obtained by testing materials without such support.
Testing of materials that melt, drip, or delaminate to such a degree that the
continuity of the flame front is destroyed, results in low flame spread indices
that do not relate directly to indices obtained by testing materials that remain in
place.” – ASTM E84-20 Sections 1.4 – 1.5
The purpose of the method is to determine the relative burning behaviour of the material by
observing the flame spread along the specimen. Flame spread and smoke developed index are
reported. However, there is not necessarily a relationship between these two measurements.
It is the expressed intent of the test method to provide only comparative measurements of
surface flame spread and smoke density of the tested material against measurements for select
grade red oak flooring and fiber-cement board when tested under specific fire exposure
conditions. The test method exposes a nominal 24-ft (7.32-m) long by 20-in. (508-mm) wide test
specimen to a controlled air flow and flaming fire exposure adjusted to produce a specific flame
spread distance vs time calibration using select grade red oak flooring.
The test method does not provide information regarding heat transmission through the tested
surface, the effect of aggravated flame spread behaviour resulting from the proximity of
combustible walls and ceilings, or the classification or definition of materials as non-combustible
using flame spread index alone.
This standard should be used to measure and describe the properties of materials, products, or
assemblies in response to heat and flame under controlled laboratory conditions and should
not be used to describe or appraise the fire hazard or fire risk of materials, products, or
assemblies under actual fire conditions. However, results of this test may be used as elements
of a fire risk assessment which takes into account all of the factors which are pertinent to an
assessment of the fire hazard of a particular end use.

TEST RESULTS
COMMENTARY ON CLASSIFICATION
Neither ASTM E84 nor UL 723 include classification criteria for the results obtained from testing.
The International Building Code® (IBC), NFPA 101: Life Safety Code® (NFPA 101), and NFPA 5000:
Building Construction and Safety Code® (NFPA 5000) all describe a set of classification criteria
required for interior wall and ceiling finish materials based on Flame Spread Index and Smoke
Developed Index when tested in accordance with ASTM E84 or UL 723. The classification criteria
for all three model codes is the same:
A 0-25 0-450
B 26-75 0-450
C 76-200 0-450
Note that classification under this scheme for interior wall and ceiling finishes does not strictly
apply to all products or materials tested in accordance with ASTM E84 or UL 723 because not all
products or materials are recommended or suitable for use as interior wall or ceiling finish
materials in buildings, regardless of the surface burning characteristics. Consult with the
product manufacturer and the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) regarding specific
applications of a given product or material.

1. Preliminary remark
For the usability of structural elements and appliances it is crucial to determine the properties of all
used materials with regard to bacteria and moulds because these pose a potential risk of infection
for humans. Furthermore, materials that promote the growth of microorganisms usually require a
higher level of cleaning and disinfecting maintenance for the respective components and
appliances.
2. Implementation
Testing was performed pursuant to DIN EN ISO 846 „Evaluation of the effect of microorganisms on
synthetic materials“, methods A and C. The evaluations were based on visual assessment.
This test is used to evaluate the behaviour of materials regarding the influence of specific moulds
and bacteria.
Using methods A and C it can be determined - under respective test conditions (pursuant to DIN
EN ISO 846) - whether the test materials behaviour remains inert or if it serves as a nutrient source
for moulds (method A) and bacteria (method C).

Blending of said bacteria suspension with a carbon-free* or low-carbon culture medium which was
liquefied and cooled down to 45°C,
Filling the Petri dishes with the inoculated agar,
Placing the specimens onto the cooled agar and then dousing the specimens with the inoculated
agar (approx. 1mm cover layer on the specimens) (5 parallel sets),
Preparation of 3 parallel sterile samples onto each of which 3 ml of ethanol-water-mixture is
pipetted in a mass ratio of 70 : 30,
Incubation of test specimens over a period of 4 weeks at a steady temperature of 29 ± 1°C and a
relative humidity of > 95%,
Visual inspection of the test specimens with the naked eye as well as with a stereoscopic
microscope (at 50 x magnification) for bacterial growth after 2 weeks and after 4 weeks followed by
an evaluation of the growth in comparison to the control samples.
3. Evaluation
The evaluation of the microbial growth on the test specimens was done according to Table 1 and in
comparison to the control samples
1 no growth visible to the naked eye but clearly visible under the microscope
2 Growth visible to the naked eye, up to 25% of the sample surface covered
3 Growth visible to the naked eye, up to 50% of the sample surface covered

K-FLEX HISTORY
K-FLEX® was founded in 1989 in Roncello, located north of Milan, Italy, with the first production plant of elastomeric materials for thermal insulation.
K-FLEX® quickly developed its presence in the market and grew rapidly. In 1993, K-FLEX® had already established a significant market share in Italy. It
subsequently expanded into other European markets such as France and Spain, opening in Barcelona in 1995 and in Madrid in 1998. Almost ten years
after its foundation, K-FLEX® began its expansion outside Europe starting up K-FLEX® China. Based in Guangzhou was the first of two manufacturing
plants with a second plant built in Suzhou, which opened in 2009.The Company built further production facilities in the US, in Russia in 2005, in
Malaysia, Poland, India and Dubai. In order to expand its commercial footprint, the Company opened distribution branches and various other
distribution / sales companies in Germany (2000), Scandinavia (2005), United Kingdom (2006), Romania (2008), Japan (2008), Ukraine (2009), South
Korea (2009). In the 2008 another strategic activity was the 100% share acquisition of BevEx Ltd. BevEx offers an important diversification opportunity
for K-FLEX® through its presence in the Food & Beverage sector. At the end of 2009, K-FLEX® opened its headquarter in Roncello, housing a 50,000 sq.
meter production facility. In the last few years K-FLEX® has been expanding the production facilities in Russia, Poland, India and USA in order to better
answer to the local market request. In June 2014, the company changed its legal form from limited liability company (S.r.l.) to joint stock company
(S.p.A.). In 2017, the plant in the USA was extended towards the biggest and most modern plant worldwide. Also the Polish plant was extended in 2017
and represents the biggest and most modern plant in Europe. In 2018, a new production site in Egypt was opened. In 2018, the new K-FLEX® logistics
centre “K-FLEX®Logistikzentrum Leipzig-Halle” in Germany was opened. It is now the biggest distribution centre for elastomeric foams in whole
2
Europe. In 2019, a new production site in Vietnam has been opened in support of the Asian region market request. In the same year K-FLEX®
implemented his Polish factory with a new polyethylene production plant. In 2020, a new production site in Mexico was opened to support the growing
of South American market. Based in Apodaca, N.L., Mexico, its 600,000 sf (56,000 m2), 2-building campus, it represents the third bigger production site
of the Company and one of the largest in the world. It is dedicated to the manufacture of the full range of K-FLEX® thermal insulation products based on
Flexible Elastomeric Foam (FEF) and Polyethylene Foam (PEF).

of 2021. The third building at the Polish site, which will be used as a new warehouse, was also opened during the same period. While in the first quarter
of 2022 work began on the fourth building, which will be dedicated that will be devoted to the production of underfloor heating/cooling systems.
This declaration refers to products made in the Polish plant in Uniejów.
PRODUCT INFORMATION
The insulation product is a material that, thanks to particular characteristics, prevents the transmission or diffusion of thermal, acoustic, electrical or
other energy, depending on the application for which it is intended. The present LCA study refers to six thermal insulation products made by K-Flex,
which are summarized and described below:
• K-FLEX® ST, K-FLEX® ST PLUS and ISOLINE are suitable for all applications both civil and industrial that require the use of insulation material,
without neglecting the price/quality relationship: refrigeration, air-conditioning, heating and plumbing, tanks, pipe fittings and water ducts;
• K-FLEX® EC is suitable for all applications both civil and industrial that require the use of insulation material;
• K-FLEX® ECO is a real “safe and secure” answer to reducing energy consumption while, at the same time, protecting the environment.
Elastomeric insulation material formulated and produced without using halogens. Thanks to its composition, any fumes given off during a fire
are transparent and non-toxic to anyone in the vicinity. Approval and certification of product values are part of the company’s strategy aimed at
optimizing and continuously improving basic requirements;
• K-FLEX® SOLAR the perfect solution for solar panels and industrial processes up to150°C. Revolutionary new packaging, tailor-made for the
client, with practical and economical advantages for use and distribution;
• K-FLEX® SRC ECO: insulating product comprising a closed cell expanded elastomeric layer and a protective coating. Thanks to the particular
mixture of the halogen-free expanded elastomer, it guarantees that, in the event of a fire, the fumes emitted are free of dangerous halogen acids
3

The Upstream (A1) phase includes raw material extraction and processing, and in particular:
✓ Extraction and processing of raw materials (e.g. mining processes);
✓ Generation of electricity, steam and heat from primary resources, also including their extraction, refining and transport;
Module D includes reuse, recovery and/or recycling potentials, expressed as net impacts and benefits.
In the end of life stage, the K-Flex thermal insulation product is sent exclusively to landfill. As there are no possibilities to separate the insulation
product from tanks, pipe fittings, water ducts etc., phase C1 (de-construction and demolition) is irrelevant; moreover, the product is only disposed, so
phase C3 (waste treatment for reuse, recovery and / or recycling) is equal to zero. The result of phase D is also equal to zero, because there are no
benefits deriving from the end of life (recycling, recovery and / or reuse).
PRODUCTION PROCESS
Weighting out raw materials from the warehouse according to the recipe for the actual production. Mixing weighted out all components in a mixer, and
after in a roll mill to complete the mixing of the “Masterbatch”.
All raw materials are dosed into the mixer and mixed together with “Masterbatch”, and after in the ROLLMILL. Small samples are prepared for quality
controls. After the cooling down, the Final batch is transported to the extruders area, where the material is extruded according to the shape and size
needed. The extruded rubber pass directly into the oven for vulcanization and foaming process. Water bath is used to cool down the expanded rubber
that is successively dried in a dedicated tunnel. The last step before packaging is the ink printing and cutting to required lengths. Small samples of
finished products are constantly picked-up during the whole production.

Selected generic data from international databases were used (Ecoinvent 3.8) regarding the production processes of raw materials and auxiliary
materials used for the production, generation and distribution of electricity, means of transport and waste treatment processes related to the
production that takes place in the plant. In addition, data on ground transportation distances were calculated using the Google Maps online calculator
and those by sea using the Searates online tool.
In accordance with the cut-off rule, packaging of raw material and ancillary were excluded from the assessment.

K-FLEX®
APPLICATION
MANUAL
2
K-FLEX® produces flexible elastomeric foam, polyethylene and mineral wool insulating pipes and sheets.
A variety of product types, from tubing to flat sheeting, is available with specific technical characteristics for individual applications. Whenever applied outdoors
K-FLEX® products must be covered or clad for UV and wheater protection (e.g. Aluminum, steel, K-FLEX® AL CLAD, K-FLEX® IC CLAD or K-FLEX® IN CLAD)
Where the tubing has to be cut for applications purposes, its thermal insulating characteristics are maintained using the proper K-FLEX® glue.
With large diameter pipes or conduits, insulation is carried out using elastomeric sheets cut to size.
For technical information on K-FLEX® products and details of sizes available, please refer to the individual data sheets which are available from K-FLEX®
Technical Dept.
K-FLEX® recommends that fitting has to be carried out to the highest possible standards to optimise the insulation effectiveness.

in confined spaces. It gives a professional, durable
finish. It dries rapidly, and provides excellent
coverage. When used as a primer, subsequent
layers of white paint retain their color even in dark
surroundings. Colors are fade resistant. K-FLEX® GLUE DISPENSER

EXPERT TIPS:
For pipes with low medium temperatures, the pipe shell must be provided with a continuous vapour-tight outer jacket barrier.
Store trays in a warm environment before processing in the cold season (to avoid surface condensate).
Always bind joints with color-matched adhesive tape so that they are tight.
The processing temperature of the self-adhesive trays and the associated adhesive tapes is +10 °C to +35 °C Always overlap the adhesive tapes!
Mineral wool pipe trays are not suitable for outdoor use.
This prevents tensile stresses due to the weight of the shell on the adhesive points. Tensile stresses on the overlap bond must generally be avoided!
1)
At ambient temperatures above 40 °C and in the case of subsequently inaccessible cables, the mineral wool sections must also be secured with aluminium
