UNIT 1 - HOREGALLU  He even offers money.

 But Baldwin disagrees.

MENDING WALL  SammaaN helped rickshaw pullers.

 Mending wall is a poem about walls.  SammaaN taught their children.
 Any Woman is a beautiful poem.  The wall separates the two neighbours.  SammaaN gave new life to the community.
 It tells us about the importance of women in a family.  There is a wall between the poet and his neighbour.  The community felt safe and happy
 They are like the pillars of a house.  They meet every year to repair the wall.
 She takes care of the family.  The poet does not love walls. DIDI
 She holds them together.  But the neighbour says good fences make good neighbours
 She is the wall against all dangers.  Didi (Shaheen Mistri) was a rich girl.
 She wishes to be alive till her children grow. AMIGO BROTHERS  Her parents were abroad.
 She began to study in India.
MATCHBOX  Amigo brothers is the story of two friends – Antonio and Felix  Then she visited slums in Mumbai.
 They lived like brothers.  She wanted to do something to help the poor people there.
 Matchbox is a story of a married couple.  Both had the same dream.  She decided to give basic education to their children.
 Ajit and Nomita are husband and wife.  They wanted to become boxing champions.  She started Akanksha Foundation for this.
 She is from a poor family.  In the tournament they fight for victory.  Now Akanksha has many centres in India.
 She is beautiful.  But in the end, they leave without waiting for the result.
 Ajit hides her letter regularly.  Friendship wins STAMMER
 One day Nomita finds this.
 She quarrels with him. THE HOUR OF TRUTH  Stammer is a poem written by K. Satchidanandan.
 Women are like matchboxes.  The poet says that stammer is not a handicap.
 They have great power.  The Hour of Truth is a one act play about honesty.  It is a way of speech.
 But they remain silent.  Robert Baldwin is an honest man.  It is a gap between word and its meaning.
 He worked in Gresham’s bank.  It is the silence between words and action.
 Gresham was his close friend.  It is common to all.
 Gresham misuses the fund and was arrested  The poet says that God also stammered when he created man.
 He asks Baldwin to lie at court.

UNIT 4  A lady Postal assistant is the main character. ● He offered a huge amount to Baldwin to tell a lie to save him
 A Christmas gift is mistaken for a time bomb. ● His family also wanted him to take the money.
WHEN A SAPLING IS PLANTED  The people there put it in water. ● But Baldwin was not ready to do so.
 It was a beautiful Swiss clock.
 ‘When a Sapling is Planted" is a speech. ● Towards the end Baldwin gets a better job.
 It was destroyed completely.
 She spoke when she got Nobel Prize.  The lady Postal assistant leaves her job for ever. ● Thus, truth wins in the end.
 She was the first African woman to get Nobel Prize.
She started the Green Belt Movement. NOMITA

 It was against deforestation and Commercial farming.

● Nomita is the main character in the story ‘Matchbox
 They planted millions of plants.  It is a comic poem with a good message.
 Kenya became green again ● She was beautiful woman from a poor family.
 The poet tells us the experience in a dental clinic.
● She was married to Ajit, a member of a large rich family.
 We will sit with our mouth wide open.
RICE  We will not be able to move. ● Her mother was a poor old widow.
 The dentist will work like a man repairing a road. ● But she could not help her mother as she was jobless.
 Rice is a poem by Chemmanam Chacko.  All want to keep teeth clean to avoid dentist. ● Ajit had low opinion about her and her mother.
 The poet is returning from North India.  For that we have to visit the dentist regularly. ● But she remained silent.
 He wanted to eat a meal of rice.
● But one day she reacted violently.
He is travelling in a train.

He thinks that it will be planting season.
CRIME AND PUNISHMENT

FELIX VARGAS
 But when he reached home, he was shocked.  It is a short story written by R.K. Narayan.
 The paddy field has changed to rubber plantations.  A teacher and a boy are the main characters.  Felix Vargas is one of the main characters in the story “Amigo
 The poem is a satire on the change of attitude.  The parents appointed a private teacher for their child. Brothers”
 They asked him not to punish the boy.  He was seventeen years old.
DANGERS OF DRUG ABUSE  The boy was not ready to learn.  He was the close friend of Antonio Cruz.
 The teacher punishes him at last.
 Dangers of drug abuse is an essay  The boy blackmails the teacher.
 Felix was dark, short, and husky.
 It tells about the effect of sensual drugs on brain.  The teacher wanted to keep his job.  He had black hair in natural afro style.
 Drugs can be divided into medicines and sensual drugs.  His ambition was to become a boxing champion of the world.
 Sensual drugs affect the brain cells.
