ABSTRACT
Every day, you use a multitude of physical objects and a variety of services. Most of the physical
objects have been manufactured and most of the services have been provided by people in
organizations. Just as fish are said to be unaware of the water that surrounds them, most of us
give little thought to the organizational processes that produce these goods and services for our
use. The study of operations deals with how the goods and services that you buy and consume
every day are produced.
The following video shows some of the basic strategic areas in operations management. We will
cover some of these areas in addition to some tools and techniques used in operations
management.
Every organization has an operations function, whether or not it is called ‘operation’. The goal
or purpose of most organizations involves the production of goods and/or services. To do this,
they have to procure resources, convert them into outputs and distribute them to their
intended users. The term operations embrace all the activities required to create and deliver an
organization’s goods or services to its customers or clients.
Within large and complex organizations, operations is usually a major functional area, with
people specifically designated to take responsibility for managing all or part of the
organization’s operations processes. It is an important functional area because it plays a crucial
role in determining how well an organization satisfies its customers. In the case of private-
sector companies, the mission of the operations function is usually expressed in terms of
profits, growth and competitiveness; in public and voluntary organizations, it is often expressed
in terms of providing value for money.
Workplace operations management is the systematic approach to overseeing the processes and
activities within a workplace to ensure optimal efficiency, productivity, and effectiveness. It
encompasses a wide range of functions and responsibilities aimed at streamlining operations,
minimizing waste, and maximizing output. At its core, workplace operations management
involves the strategic allocation and utilization of resources, including human capital,
equipment, materials, and finances, to achieve organizational goals.
This field entails the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of workflows,
procedures, and systems to enhance performance and meet the evolving needs of the
organization. Key areas of focus include inventory management, supply chain
optimization, quality control, and risk mitigation. Workplace operations managers
are tasked with coordinating various departments, teams, and stakeholders to
ensure smooth operations and seamless collaboration.
Effective workplace operations management requires strong leadership, analytical
skills, and the ability to make data-driven decisions. It involves identifying
inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and areas for improvement through process analysis
and performance metrics. By implementing best practices and leveraging
technology and innovation, organizations can enhance their competitive advantage
and adapt to changing market dynamics.
In online shops, sometimes we don't know how much of each thing to have. This
causes problems like running out of stuff customers want or having too much of
things they don't. Then, customers get upset, we lose sales, and we waste money.
Also, working with suppliers can be tough because they might not deliver on time.
We need to figure out better ways to guess what customers will buy, keep track of
our stuff better, and work with suppliers to make sure everything runs smoothly
and keeps customers happy while saving money.
1.3 Importance of workplace operation management
1. Resource Allocation: Operations managers are responsible for allocating resources such
as manpower, materials, equipment, and finances efficiently to support the organization's
objectives. This involves identifying needs, budgeting, and optimizing resource utilization.
2. Process Improvement: Operations managers continuously analyze existing processes to
identify inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and areas for improvement. They implement strategies,
methodologies, and tools to streamline workflows, reduce waste, and enhance productivity.
3. Quality Control: Ensuring product or service quality is a crucial responsibility of
operations management. Operations managers establish quality standards, implement quality
control measures, and monitor processes to ensure that products or services meet or exceed
customer expectations.
4. Supply Chain Management: Operations managers oversee the entire supply chain
process, from sourcing raw materials to delivering finished products or services to customers.
They collaborate with suppliers, manage inventory levels, and optimize logistics to ensure
smooth supply chain operations.
5. Inventory Management: Operations managers are responsible for managing inventory
levels to meet demand while minimizing holding costs and stockouts. They develop inventory
strategies, track inventory levels, and implement systems for inventory control and optimization.
1.6
Literature Review: Review existing literature to understand key concepts, theories, and
previous research findings related to workplace operations management.
Research Design: Determine the research approach (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed
methods), data collection methods (surveys, interviews, observations), and sampling strategy
(random, purposive, convenience).
Data Collection: Collect data from relevant sources such as employees, managers, and
organizational records using chosen methods and instruments.
Data Analysis: Analyze the collected data using appropriate techniques such as statistical
analysis, thematic coding, or content analysis to identify patterns, themes, and insights related
to workplace operations management.
Findings Interpretation: Interpret the findings of the analysis in the context of existing
literature and theoretical frameworks, drawing conclusions and implications for workplace
operations management.
Discussion: Discuss the implications of the findings, limitations of the study, and areas
for future research in the field of workplace operations management.
Recommendations: Provide recommendations for organizations to improve workplace
operations based on the research findings and insights.
Conclusion: Summarize the key findings and contributions of the study to the field of
workplace operations management.
References: Cite all sources used in the study to acknowledge existing research and
support the validity of findings.
Appendices: Include any supplementary materials such as interview transcripts, survey
questionnaires, or data analysis outputs for transparency and reproducibility.
