The word Kalaripayattu is a combination of two Malayalam

words - kalari (training ground or battleground) and payattu

(training of martial arts), which is roughly translated as "practice
in the arts of the battlefield."
Students learnt three Kalari Vandana along with guru Vandana in
last 10days. Otherwise there are different walks and postures in
Kalari like, Gadavadivu (Elephant posture), Aswa Vadivu (horse
posture) and singh vadivu (Tiger posture).
Kalaripayattu is one of the oldest martial art practice of India, it
helps to build reflex, concentration, body flexibility and balance,
which improves body and mind of an actor.
Navarasa Sadhana
The process of Navarasa Sadhana was to sharpen our imagination
and reach to extreme points of the nine different emotions.
According to Indian method of acting there are nine emotions
Shringar, Adbhut, Veer, Roudra, Bhayanak, Karun, Hasya,
Bibhatsa, Shant
Actors must practice all the emotions thoroughly to enhance their
capability to imagine, feel and emote or respond.
The practice of Navarasa Sadhana has been developed by G.
Venu, who’s a remarkable Kuttiyattam performer and a scholar
of Indian methods of acting & dance. Kuttiyaatm is the oldest
form of theatre existing in India and has been declared as
intangible asset by the UNESCO.
In Malayalam ‘Kuti’ means together and ‘Attam’ means dance.
Therefore it means dancing/acting together. The actor only uses
their eyes and facial expressions while performing in Kuttiyattam,
there hardly any words/ text spoken.
Shringar Rasa
In this Navarasa Sadhana demonstration we will start with
sringar rasa. The actors will imagine themselves in the moment
with their loved ones in front of them and experiencethe emotion
of ‘ love’.
Adbhut Rasa
The emotion of wonder was practiced by the students where they
were given a situation to imagine something spectacular,
something unexpected, something unimaginable happening in
front of you and you get so awe struck with the vision that you
start to jump, run and reach a state of trance out of sheer
happiness.
Veer Rasa
To experience Veer or Pride, the actors will be playing the
character of Ravana from the play ‘Abhishek’ by Bhasa’.Parvati
Viraham’ is a portion in the text where Shiva and Parvati were
sitting on Kailasha and were having a a fight over Ganga. Parvati
could see a woman on Shiva jata, but could not understand who
she was. When she asked Shiva who’s that woman Shiva got
scared and completely denied the presence of Ganga on his head.
Parvati got furious by Shiva’s behaviour and she wass about to
leave Kailasha. Just at that time Ravana was passing over
Kailasha on his pushpak viman, and Shiva immediately requested
to do something so that Pravati does not leave Kailasha. Ravana
could not think of what to do.. instead he lifted the whole of
Kailasha as a consequence Parvati could not move and fell in the
arms of Shiva and Shiva immediately embraced her.
The students will play the character of Ravana, who will asses the
length, breadth and height of Mount Kailasha and lift if with all
the strenghth and experience ‘Pride’.

Roudra Rsasa
In this rasa Students improvised on the story of Kannaki, the
Goddess of Anger in South Indian mythology. In Cilppatikaram,
which means ‘the ankle bracelet’ in Tamil is a series of poems also
known as the earliest Tamil epic. Kannaki is a simple, docile wife
of Kovalan who was a businessman. But Kovalan falls in love with
another woman and leaves Kannaki. Eventually Kovalan with
struck by misfortune and he looses all his wealth and Madhvi as
well. Kovalan comes back to Kannaki and requests her to accept
him and start a new life. Kannaki happily agrees. One day
Kovalan goes out in the market to sell off one of Kannaki’s
anklets. But co incidentally the queen of the state has lost her
anklet too and the shop keeper thought Kovalan is the thief. As a
consequence Kovalan was beheaded by King Pandya’s order and
was thrown in the street. When Kannaki comes to about it she
goes mad in anger and confronts the King saying that it was her
own ankle and not the queens. She gets so enraged in anger that
she lucks her own breast and sets the whole Kingdom on fire.
That’s the epic story of Kannaki’s anger.
Students will now portray the Roudra rasa as Kannaki.
