The moot question is – do only external toxins harm us? We are so careful about
what we ingest, but how many of us are aware of the noxious toxins we
inadvertently keep on churning within our own system? Internal toxins are hatred,
repressed anger, jealousy, neurotic fear, ill-will towards others, and guilt, to name
a few. The injurious effect of external toxins can be perceived as the manifestation
of physical diseases, but the consequences of the aforesaid internal toxins can be

The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki provides our only direct

experience of the consequences of nuclear explosions on cities. Those events have
taught us a great deal about the potential physical and biological impact of a
nuclear war. But it must be remembered that the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
experienced only a single explosion each of a weapon much smaller in yield than
many of those stockpiled in world nuclear arsenals today. The bomb dropped on
Hiroshima released energy equalling 20 kilo- tons of chemicals explosive.
It must be remembered that the environmental impact of the Hiroshima
bombs was geographically limited, and survivors were almost immediately able
to obtain the medical and other assistance from outside. Thus, the impact of those
bombs, though devastating for the people directly affected, was much more
limited than might be expected in a full-scale war. The deployment of increasing

numbers of powerful weapons since Hiroshima and Nagasaki prompts the

question, "What will happen if many modern nuclear weapons are exploded?" It
is obvious that the consequences will be far more severe than in 1945. The most

contemplated until recently, ie, the possibility that smoke from massive nuclear-
ignited urban fires can cause a worldwide disruption in the planet's weather and
climate.

It was once believed that being overweight was healthy, but nowadays few
people subscribe to this viewpoint. While many people are fighting the battle to
reduce weight, studies are being conducted concerning the appetite and how it is
controlled by both emotional and biochemical factors. Some of the conclusions
of these studies may give insights into how to deal with weight problems. For
example, when several hundred people were asked about their eating habits in
times of stress, 44 per cent said they reacted to stressful situations by eating.
Further investigations with both humans and animals indicated that it is not food
which relieves tension but rather the act of chewing. A test in which subjects were
blindfolded showed that obese people have a keen sense of taste and crave for
more flavourful food than non-obese people. When deprived of that variety and

intensity of tastes, obese people are not satisfied and consequently eat more to
fulfil this need. Blood samples taken from people after they were shown a picture
of food reveal that overweight people reacted with an increase in blood insulin, a
chemical associated with appetite. This did not happen with average weight
people.
