A vernacular or vernacular language is a dialect or language spoken by individuals who live in a

certain nation or region. The vernacular is the native language, which is usually spoken informally
rather than written and is seen as having a lesser status than more formalised varieties.

The growth of vernacular languages was aided by the Renaissance. As Europe's languages
developed, regional dialects became increasingly popular. For the most part, vernacular languages
have supplanted Latin.
