Question 4—Electromechanical system modelling and analysis (7 marks)

Consider the DC Generator system shown in the figure below. Since the generator is essentially an electric
motor run in reverse, the voltage is proportional to the engine speed, i.e. 𝑉𝑉𝐺𝐺 = 𝐾𝐾𝑏𝑏 𝜔𝜔𝑒𝑒 (where 𝜔𝜔𝑒𝑒 is the speed
of the engine), and the “back torque” which acts on the engine inertia is 𝑇𝑇𝑏𝑏 = 𝐾𝐾𝑡𝑡 𝑖𝑖𝑔𝑔 (where 𝑖𝑖𝑔𝑔 is the current
through the generator). The engine is subject to damping (due to the fluid film bearings) with coefficient 𝑏𝑏.

Figure 2: System for Question 3

𝑉𝑉𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 (𝑠𝑠)
a) find the transfer function 𝐺𝐺 (𝑠𝑠) = 𝑇𝑇𝑒𝑒 (𝑠𝑠)
using the parameters denoted in the figure. Ignore
gravity, and do not plug in parameter values yet (i.e. the transfer function should include 𝐽𝐽𝑒𝑒 ,𝐶𝐶,
etc.).
b) Now, consider the parameter values below:
Parameter Value
Engine Inertia, 𝐽𝐽𝑒𝑒 (𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘 𝑚𝑚) 0.25
Torque Constant, 𝐾𝐾𝑡𝑡 (N m/A) 1
Back EMF Constant, 𝐾𝐾𝑏𝑏 (Vs/rad) 1
Generator resistance, 𝑅𝑅 (Ω) 1
Load resistance, 𝑅𝑅𝐿𝐿 (Ω) 5
Capacitance, 𝐶𝐶 (F) 10
Damping coefficient, 𝑏𝑏 (N m/s) 0.5
Compute the overshoot, settling time, and rise time for the system.
c) Sketch (by hand) the Bode plot for 𝐺𝐺(𝑠𝑠) with the parameter values from the table above. As a part
of this, please carefully compute and label:
iv. All asymptotes (e.g. low-frequency & high frequency)
v. All corner frequencies
vi. Resonance frequency and magnitude (if resonance exists).
