You are now a
homesteader!
...what is a homesteader???
Homesteader

- someone who lives frugally or

self-sufficiently
- usually has a farm or a small
piece of land
- grows their own food and
raises farm animals

House your pet!
The Trio
- 1 buck + 2 does
- constant access to
hay/pellets + water
- include places to hide !!!
- underground burrows are
ideal for regulating
temperature, especially when
they have babies
Feed your pet!
Bunny diet
- dark leafy greens = HIGH IN
PROTEIN
- not too many sugary foods
though (fruits)
- most weeds growing in your
garden are probably edible
- VARIETY IS KEY
Daikon
radishes

White clover

Comfrey
Your bunny just had
babies!
Congratulations!
Baby caring
- momma is the main carer
- will drink milk from her for
about 4 weeks, then move onto
solid foods
- once they reach 8 weeks of
age, start weighing them
These buns are no
ordinary buns!
They are...
MEAT RABBITS

Meat Rabbits
- usually by 12 weeks they
reach 5 pounds, which is when
you BUTCHER THEM.
- physically much easier to
butcher than a chicken (no
feathers, skin can be pulled off
like a glove)
- tastes like chicken
- firmer texture, more lean
Why do homesteaders choose
to raise MEAT RABBITS?
Chickens +
self sufficiency = X
- grocery store chicken
(Cornish Cross, Red Ranger,
etc.) = fast growth rates
-> must buy chicks from a
hatcher = doesn’t pay off
-> raised up to 8 weeks old (6
pounds)
-> IF IT LIVES ANY OLDER
IT HAS ORGAN FAILURE
-> grows so large its body can’t
keep up and its legs break
under it
-> can’t breed them effectively
yourself (bad genetics)
Meat Rabbits +
self sufficiency = ✔
- very similar growth rates
- eat less food
- they breed true
- live up to 10+ years
- can be raised in a colony
where they get a better life
than any meat chicken
- far easier to process without
any equipment
- can raise them for free just
by raising a few crops for them
Cons = the cuteness factor
In summary...
- source of meat you can
replicate on your own property
without much space
- they don’t require much to
eat
- aren’t laborious to process
