What is the major difference between Isolationism and Imperialism? Make sure you explain
using one example from the readings (Hawaii, the Spanish-American War, etc.).

There were 2 types of foreign policy practiced from the 18th to 20th century. Isolationism was the
first type of foreign policy approved by President George Washington and imperialism was the
second. These 2 policies are like hot and cold being completely different in most ways the only
similarities being found in the Monroe doctrine when Monroe threatens violence if any
European country interferes with the west. Today we will talk about their major differences.

First let’s talk about isolationism. Isolationism is the theory that the united states in particular
shouldn’t involve itself in any foreign affairs whatsoever. This belief stemmed from a newly
independent united states whom just weeks prior had Britain occupying itself. The new nation
did not want any relations with foreign nations on the basis that they were a newly independent
nation and should be free to run it too without the influence of foreign nations. An example of
this is north Korea right now. They have closed all international borders and are only regulating
within their own borders. Isolationism was believed to be the more appropriate way to do
things in order to not entangle themselves in another country’s situation.

Next lets us talk about the foreign policy that America adopts in the 20th century imperialism.
Unlike isolationism imperialism meant that America would be directly involved in building and
empire for themselves all the while controlling countries that were inferior to them. There are
several examples of this in us history. For example the Philippine American war saw American
warships led by general dewy to destroy the Spanish and claim the Philippines for the united
states. The majior difference between the 2 is not that ine is active in foreign aid and another is
not but that imperialistic united states forcefully declared itself as the ruler of the western
hemisphere and gave themselves sovrinety to intervene in international conflicts whereas the
moroe doctrine preached non interference but still threatened foreign countries while doing it.
