Folder 10 : King Solomons Mines

The book that have been chosen to be in my folder is the King Solomons Mines book written by the Victorian adventure writer and fabulist H. Rigger. Haggard. The story of the book is about a search of an unexplored region of Africa by a group of adventurers. The leader Allan Quatermain is approached by Sir Henry Curtis and helps him to find his brother who have been lost in King Solomons Mines. They lead an expedition to King Solomons Mines to find the treasure and share it. As they try to find the treasure they have many adventures: climbing mountains, being trapped under the earth, being attacked by native people and more. In the end they go back to England rich with some losses during their expedition. His book: King Solomon's Mines is one of the first children literature books that came out in 19th century. Also is the first English adventure novel that is set in Africa and is considered to be the genesis of the Lost World literary genre.

Sir Henry Rider Haggard was an English writer of adventures novels. His novel topics were about exotic locations and adventures. Sir Henry Rider Haggard was born at Bradenham, Norfolk 1856 and he died in 1925. In the late of 19th century many expeditions and many explorers were uncovering ancient civilizations around the world, something that inspired Henry Rider Haggard to write books and especially the novel King Solomons Mines about adventures. Also the fact that he had traveled in what is now called South Africa to work inspired him to write the novel. Visual Concept
The concept of the book can take me in a treasure hunt journey in Africa. In big rocky mountains with early daylight on them , with the purple light of the atmosphere on their peaks. Furthermore as the plot goes on , the concept goes in another journey inside the mountain , inside the earth where we face enormous caves deep inside the mountain with stalactites, old small catacomb rooms with old statues, treasure rooms and really interesting places. This book is really interesting and appealing because of its good story it combine many different concepts art scenes that we can work. Below there is an influence map that combine different influence reference pictures for the 3 different passages I have chosen for my 3 different concept art digital drawings.

Scene Selection
CHAPTER XVI: The Place Of Death

In this first excerpts the adventurers are in the mountains climbing and eventually facing a giant hole that leads them underground to the mines. I chose this scene because I have never worked in the past with mountains and it really appeals interesting to me. This scene also gives me many thing to work with. Except the mountains I can work with the colors of the atmosphere, the daylight color in the scene, the purple color the peaks have, it seems really good. I have found pictures that have influenced me and have given me ideas of how my concept art digital painting will be. Below is my influence map for this scene.

CHAPTER XVI: The Place Of Death

This scene that I had chosen from the book is about a big cave under the mountain with poor light and many stalactites. The description of this scene in the book couldnt make me resist to choose it for a drawing. It seems really good, and drawing an enormous cave full of stalagmites is very interesting and very appealing. I have found pictures that have influenced me and have given me ideas of how my concept art digital painting will be. Below is my influence map for this scene.

CHAPTER XVII: Solomon's Treasure Chamber

I chose this scene from the book because drawing old underground rooms full of treasure seem really nice and also is a personal challenge for me, because I will have to work with perspective and I havent worked before, so this specific scene will give me the opportunity to work and learn the basics and principles of perspective. Although not many details about this scene are given it is still interesting. I have found pictures that have influenced me and have given me ideas of how my concept art digital painting will be. Below is my influence map for this scene.

Key Thumbnails
Below there are 2 thumbnails that I think I will follow them for my final design . This thumbnail refers to the second extract.

This thumbnail refers to the first extract.

Unfortunately I havent found any key thumbnail for my first scene, the treasure chamber but Im experimenting with different variations.

Essay Introduction
My essay will be based on 1-2 film movies that will be analyzed and studied for their concept art part. I will make comparisons and analyze different types of concept art. Also I will produce and find information about concept art and the meaning of concept art in the movies. Unfortunately I havent decided which films I will use for my essay. Im between Dogville 2003 Lars von Trier which examine the subject of concept art and perception, Inception 2010 Christopher Nolan, Tron Legacy 2010 Joseph Kosinski, The Matrix 1999 Larry and Andy Wachowski, A Clockwork Orange 1971 Anthony Burgess's . But as soon as possible I will decide the next following days I will inform you. (Im sorry Phil, I will try to inform you as soon as possible)
