ARMY ORDER
AO 01/2024 PHYSICAL EFFICIENCY TEST DTRG/G/PET/14/17
1. AO 05/2015 of 27 April 2015 and AO 16/2019 of 27 September 2019 are superseded with
effect from 01 January 2024. Army Physical Efficiency Tests to be conducted by units will be set
out in this order.
2. The tests to be carried out are divided into the following categories.
a. Test A. To test all aspects of overall physical fitness. This will apply for
both serving male officers and male other ranks below the age of 55 years and serving
female officers and female other ranks below the age of 45 years.
b. Test B. To test the Army requirements of physical fitness for male officers
and male other ranks below the age of 42 years and female officers and female other ranks
below the age of 35 years. The test is further sub-grouped to assess the fitness standard of
personnel of Combat Arms, Combat Support and Combat Service Support units.
(1) All Officers of the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and below and other ranks.
(2) All Officers of the rank of Colonel for their rank confirmation and
promotions to the next rank in accordance with the necessity of the Military
Secretary's Branch.
(3) Standards and performance ratings for all officers and other ranks at
annexes ‘B’ and ‘C’ to this order.
(1) All male officers and male other ranks up to the age of 42 years and female
officers and female other ranks up to 35 years of age. This test will be divided into
the following age groups for males:

4. Description of Tests.
a. Test A. This test will be termed the ‘Army Physical Efficiency Test’
(APET). The detailed description of the test is in annex ‘A’ to this Army Order.
(a) Bent Knee Sit Ups. A maximum number of bent knee sit-ups in
one minute (To measure the strength and endurance of the abdominals and
hip-flexor muscles).
(c) Sit and Reach Forward. Maximum sit and reach forward
distances (To measure forward trunk flexibility, hip flexion, and hamstring
muscle strength).

(2) Dress.
(a) Males.
ii. All Other ranks are to wear Grey colour short sleeved issued
T-Shirt, Olive green shorts, black socks and black sport or issued
shoes.
(b) Females.
ii. All Other ranks are to wear Grey colour short sleeved issued
T-Shirt, plain dark blue track bottom, black socks and black sport or
issued shoes.
(3) General Rules and Regulations. General rules and regulations for
APET are as follows:
(a) All events must be attempted on the same day in the order set out.
(b) Three attempts are to be given for non-fatiguing tests of APET (Sit
and Reach, Standing Board Jump, 4 x 10m Shuttle Run, Push-ups/ Pull-ups/
Sit-ups).

(4) Standards.
(a) APET test standards are formulated to test male and female officers
and other ranks under corresponding age group categories.
(b) All officers and other ranks (Males up to 39 years of age and females
up to 29 years of age) are required to achieve at least minimum stipulated
standards in all events in the APET to qualify for a classification. All other
officers and other ranks will be exempted from achieving performance
grading and are required to pass all events in the APET. Achievement
standards are given in annex ‘D’ to this order.
b. Test B. This test is termed as the ‘Battle Physical Efficiency Test’ (BPET).
(1) BPET Tests for Combat Arms and Combat Support Units.
(a) For Male Officers and Other Ranks of 35 Years and Below.
(b) For Male Officers and Other Ranks Between 36 Years and 42
Years.

(a) All events are conducted on the same day and may be attempted in

5. Medical Categories.
a. Before undergoing APET or BPET, all officers/ other ranks should be categorized
as FE and certified by the medical officer.
b. Those who are classified as battle casualties, disabled persons, and categorized
persons who wish to undergo the test have to be tested centrally by a separate board where
due consideration will be given to their injury/ disability when grading their performance.
c. Personnel with medical profiles that preclude taking certain events such as the pull-
up, sit-up, or 2.4 km run, will take the remaining tests and/or any approved alternate tests
devised by the DAMS. An alternate test is primarily designed for soldiers with permanent
physical profiles that preclude them from taking that particular event. Alternate events will
be devised and published as an Army Order.
d. However, officers and other ranks with temporary profiles of long duration (several
months) may also take an alternate event as determined by the Commander of the Army
on the advice of the DAMS.
f. Decide the pass/ fail of the BMI range of individuals by the respective board
president of APET/ SPET.
a. The testing board will be alert to symptoms and signs indicating distress on
reaching endurance limits.
c. These tests are only intended for those who have no significant medical issues
(including recent infections or injuries).
d. These tests are for those who have been exercising regularly or training for at least
4-6 weeks.
e. All Officers and other ranks attempting APET should undergo a medical test as
stipulated by the DAMS.

a. The results of APETs and BPETs will be finally ratified by a board presided by the
DGGS.
b. All Officers above the rank of Lt Col will be tested at designated locations by a
board appointed by DGGS. On appointing the board, DGGS should take into consideration
the requirements of having qualified representatives from DAMS and Commandant APTS
are to be included as members.
c. Officers of the rank of Major and below will be tested at SFHQs. DGGS will call
for nominations from SFHQs for members of the test board including the medical officers.
d. All other ranks are to be tested by boards appointed by SFHQ Comds at Div HQs.
Other ranks serving under any establishments that are not placed under a Div should also
participate in tests conducted at the Div responsible for the geographical area.

DESCRIPTION OF EVENTS
a. Starting Position:
(2) Fingers of the arms should touch behind the ears of the head and elbows
should be opened.
(3) Trunk should be up and chin should be above the knees and knees should
be kept shoulder width.
b. Down:
(2) When reaching up Gluteus muscle (Hip) should touch the floor.
c. Up:
(1) Trunk should be up and chin should reach above the knees.
(2) Fingers of the arms should touch behind the ears of the head and elbows
should be fully opened (Elbows and chest should be in one line).

a. Stand with feet about shoulder width apart, toes just behind take off lines.
b. Prepare to jump forward by swinging arms back and bending knees about 900.
c. Jump as far forward as possible taking off with both feet. Attempt not counted if
subject loses balance and falls backwards touching area behind feet.
d. Distance noted, to nearest cm between take off line and heel nearer to line.
a. Test A:
(1) Sit upright with straight back, feet about shoulder width apart, dorsiflexed
at about 900 and heels just behind 50 cm mark.
(2) Place outstretched hands together in front, with thumbs locked, index
fingers in contact with each other and tips of fingers touching surface.
(3) Reach forward as far away as possible, sliding finger tips along the ground,
without bending knees. No jerking permitted. Must hold position for at least 2 secs.
Distance noted to nearest cm.

(1) Sit on the floor with legs stretched out straight ahead. Feet (shoes off) are
placed with the soles flat against the box, shoulder-width apart.
(2) Both knees are held flat against the floor by the tester, if required. with
hands on top of each other and palms facing down, the subject reaches forward
along the measuring line as far as possible.
(3) Reach has to be held for at least two seconds while the distance is recorded.
(4) No jerky movements, and that the fingertips remain level and the legs flat.
4. Pull-Ups, Push-Ups, Inclined Flexed Arm Hang for Female, Knee Push-Ups:
a. Pull-Ups:
(1) Hang from bar with hand, about shoulder-width apart, thumbs below, arms
straight, feet clear off ground.

(not more than 4 inches).

(1) Hang from bar with hands about shoulder width apart, thumbs below, arms
and body straight, feet flat with heels resting on surface. A chair or bench may be
used to raise height so that when the bar should be vertically above mid-chest level.
(2) Upon removal of the bench or chair used as height support, pull-up (with
assistance if required) till elbows are bent 900 of less. Maintain this position (after
removing the support) breathing freely throughout. Test and timing (to nearest
second) end once the interior angle at elbow joints is more than 900.
d. Knee Push-Ups:
(1) Hands straight, knees bent and kept on the deck, ankles crossed and feet
lifted 3 inches from the deck.
(2) Go down by bending hands at elbow, chest 3 inches above the deck and
head facing forward. Maximum push-ups done within a minute will be counted.

5. Shuttle Run:
a. Equipment: Stop Watch, Wooden Block - size, weight and shape of the wooden
block should be as fols:

(a) Two small objects (as specified above) placed 10 cm apart behind
second line.
(c) At start of timing, run (from first line) and pick first object (at second
line), run back and place (should not throw) object behind first line. Then,
return to second line, pick second object and run towards first line and finish
the event (no need to place down second object).

(1) Run, jog or walk on firm and level 2.4 km (1.5 mile) distance in shortest
time possible.
(1) Minimum time to walk 3 km/ 2.5 km on a firm and level surface will be
measured.
