PHẦN I: ARTICLES (MẠO TỪ)

Mạo từ trong tiếng Anh (article) là những từ thường đứng trước danh từ, dùng để người đọc
nhận biết được danh từ đó là xác định hay không xác định. Thực tế, mạo từ không phải là một
loại từ riêng biệt mà người ta chỉ xem nó như là một bộ phận của tính từ, dùng để bổ nghĩa cho
danh từ.
Mạo từ (article) được chia làm 2 loại: Mạo từ xác định (definite article) “The” và Mạo từ
không xác định (Indefinite artcile) gồm “a, an”.
A. Phân loại mạo từ

1. Mạo từ không xác định (bất định) (Indefinite article): a, an
+ “a” thường đứng trước danh từ đếm được số ít, bắt đầu bằng một phụ âm. Tuy nhiên, một số
trường hợp bắt đầu bằng nguyên âm nhưng được phát âm như phụ âm thì vẫn sử dụng “a”.
a table, a book, an egg, an apple, an hour, an MC,
a uniform/ˈjuːnəfɔːm/, a universal truth /juːnəˈvɜːsəl/, a useful tool
+ “an” thường đứng trước danh từ đếm được số ít bắt đầu bằng phụ âm (e, u, i, o, a) hoặc âm
“h” câm.
an hour (một giờ), an honest person, an apple (một quả táo)
Đọc thêm một số trường hợp ngoại lệ trong cách sử dụng a/an:
- a university (một trường đại học)
- a one-eyed man (một người đàn ông mắt chột)
- a one-way road (đường một chiều)
- an SOS (một tín hiệu cấp cứu)
- a union (một liên minh, một đồng minh)

2. Mạo từ xác định (Denfinite article): the
Được dùng trước một đối tượng xác định (cả người nói và người nghe đều biết rõ về đối tượng
đó).
Eg: The man talking to Lan is my boyfriend
Yesterday, I saw an accident here. The accident left one person injured and the
motorcycle severely damaged.
the đọc thành /ði/ khi đứng trước một danh từ bắt đầu bằng một nguyên âm hay phụ âm câm
(phụ âm h thường là một phụ âm câm như hour (giờ) phát âm là /auə/).
Eg: the hat /hæt/ nhưng the end /ði end/
B. Cách dùng mạo từ

1. Mạo từ không xác định (Indefinite article): a, an
1.1 Được dùng với một số thành ngữ chỉ tốc độ, đo lường, giá cả, tỉ lệ hoặc các phân số
a one second (½), 3 times a day, $2 a kilo
Eg: He works forty-four hours a week.
1.2 A được dùng với các số đếm, hoặc các thành ngữ về số lượng.
Eg: a one thousand, a couple, a lots
1.3 Với ý nghĩa một người, một vật. một cái bất kỳ.
Eg: I have a sister and two brothers.
1.4. Trước các bổ ngữ từ (complement) số ít đếm được chỉ nghề nghiệp, thương mại, tôn giáo,
giai cấp
Eg: George is an engineer.
1.5. Với ý nghĩa cùng, giống (same) trong các câu tục ngữ, thành ngữ.
Eg: They were much of a size.
Birds of a feather flock together. (Chim cùng loại lông hợp đàn với nhau - Ngưu tầm
ngưu, mã tầm mã)
1.6. Trước một ngữ đồng vị (appositive) khi từ này diễn tả một ý nghĩa không quen thuộc lắm.
Eg: He was born in Lowton, a small town in Lancashire.
1.7. Trong các câu cảm thán (exclamatory sentences) bắt đầu bằng ‘What’ và theo sau là một
danh từ số ít đếm được.
Eg: What a boy! (Một chàng trai tuyệt làm sao!)
1.8. Trong các thành ngữ sau (và các cấu trúc tương tự):
It’s a pity that… : Thật tiếc rằng…
to keep it a secret : giữ bí mật
as a rule : như một nguyên tắc
to be in a hurry : vội vã
to be in a good/bad temper : bình tĩnh/cáu kỉnh
all of a sudden : bất thình lình
to take an interest in : lấy làm hứng thú trong
to make a fool of oneself : xử sự một cách ngốc nghếch
to have a headache : nhức đầu

to have an opportunity to : có cơ hội
at a discount : giảm giá
on an average : tính trung bình
a short time ago : cách đây ít lâu
Lưu ý: Không sử dụng Mạo từ không xác định (a/an) trong các trường hợp sau:
1. Trước một danh từ chỉ một tước hiệu, cấp bậc hay một chức danh chỉ có thể giữ bởi một
người trong một thời điểm nào đó.
Eg: They made him King. (Họ lập ông ta làm vua)
As Chairman of the Society, I call on Mr. Brown to speak.
2 Trước những danh từ không đếm được (uncountable nouns) hoặc danh từ số nhiều.
Eg: He has bread and butter for breakfast.
She bought beef and ham
3. Trước các danh từ chỉ các bữa ăn nói chung.
Eg: They often have lunch at 1 o’clock
Dinner will be served at 5 o’clock.
4. Trước các danh từ chỉ một nơi công cộng để diễn tả những hành động thường được thực
hiện tại nơi ấy.
Eg: He does to school in the morning
They go to market every day
5. Trước các danh từ chỉ ngày, tháng, mùa.
Eg: Sunday is a holiday.
They often go there in summer
6. Sau động từ turn với nghĩa trở nên, trở thành.
He used to be a teacher till he turned writer.(Ông ấy là một giáo viên trước khi trở thành nhà
văn)
2. Mạo từ xác định (Definite article): the

2.1 Mạo từ xác định “the” dùng cho danh từ chỉ đối tượng xác định (người nghe và người nói
đều biết rõ đối tượng đang nói đến là ai). Dùng cho cả danh từ đếm được (số ít lẫn số nhiều) và
danh từ không đếm được.
Eg: The truth (sự thật)
The time (thời gian)
The bicycle (một chiếc xe đạp)
The bicycles (những chiếc xe đạp)
2.2. Khi vật thể hay nhóm vật thể là duy nhất hoặc được xem là duy nhất. The được dùng
trước những danh từ riêng chỉ biển, sông, quần đảo, dãy núi, tên gọi của một số quốc gia, sa
mạc, miền.
Eg: The sun (mặt trời, the world (thế giới), the earth (trái đất), the sea (biển cả), the
world (thế giới).
The sun rises in the east.
The Pacific (Thái Bình Dương), The United States (Hợp chủng quốc Hoa Kỳ), The
Netherlands, the Alps (Dãy An pơ). The Thames; The Atlantic; The Bahamas, The Sahara
(desert); The Crimea (peninsula)
2.3. Trước một danh từ nếu danh từ này vừa được đề cập trước đó.
Eg: I see a dog. The dog is chasing a cat. The cat is chasing a mouse.
Once upon a time there was a little boy who lived in a cottage. The cottage was in
the country and the boy had lived there all his life.
2.4 Trước một danh từ, với điều kiện danh từ này được xác định bằng một cụm từ hoặc một
mệnh đề.
Eg: The girl in uniform (Cô gái mặc đồng phục)
The mechanic that I met (Người thợ máy mà tôi đã gặp)
The place where I waited for him (Nơi mà tôi đợi anh ta)
2.5. Đặt trước một danh từ chỉ một đồ vật riêng biệt mà người nói và người nghe đều hiểu.
Eg: Please pass the jar of honey. (Làm ơn hãy đưa cho tôi lọ mật ong với.)
2.6. Trước so sánh nhất (đứng trước first, second, only..) khi các từ này được dùng như tính từ
hoặc đại từ. Trong dạng so sánh nhất (superlatives) và trong dạng so sánh kép (double
comparative)
Eg: The first day (ngày đầu tiên)
The best time (thời gian thuận tiện nhất)
The only way (cách duy nhất)
The first to discover this accident (người đầu tiên phát hiện tai nạn này)
This is the youngest student in my class.
The harder you work, the more you will be paid.
You are the best in my life.
He is the tallest person in my class.
2.7 The + danh từ số ít: tượng trưng cho một nhóm thú vật hoặc đồ vật để chỉ cả một chủng
loại.
Eg: The horse is being replaced by the tractor.
The whale is in danger of becoming extinct (Cá voi đang trong nguy cơ tuyệt
chủng.)
2.8. "The" + Tính từ tượng trưng cho một nhóm người, một tầng lớp trong xã hội
Eg: The old (người già); the rich and the poor (người giàu và người nghèo)
2.9. Dùng “the” nếu ta nhắc đến một địa điểm nào đó nhưng không được sử dụng với đúng
chức năng.
Eg: They went to the school to see their children. (Họ đến trường để thăm con cái
họ.)
2.10. The + họ (ở dạng số nhiều) có nghĩa là gia đình.
Eg: The Smiths (Gia đình Smith (gồm vợ và các con), The Browns (Gia đình
Brown).
2.11 "The" cũng đứng Trước những tên gọi gồm Danh từ + of + danh từ
Eg: The Gulf of Mexico (Vịnh Mêhicô)
Lưu ý
South Africa (Nam Phi), North America (Bắc Mỹ), West Germany (Tây Đức), mặc dù The
north of Spain (Bắc Tây Ban Nha), The Middle East (Trung Đông); The West (Tây Phương)
Lưu ý: Không sử dụng Mạo từ “the” trong các trường hợp sau:
1. Trước đa số tên quốc gia, tên châu lục, tên núi, tên hồ, tên đường, trừ các trường hợp đặc
biệt đã kể trên.
Eg: Europe (Châu Âu), South America (Nam Mỹ), France (Pháp quốc), Downing Street
(Phố Downing)
2. Khi danh từ không đếm được hoặc danh từ đếm được số nhiều dùng theo nghĩa chung nhất,
chứ không chỉ riêng trường hợp nào.
Eg: I don't like French beer (Tôi không thích bia Pháp)
I don't like Mondays (Tôi không thích ngày thứ hai)
I like dogs (tôi thích những chú chó);
Oranges are good for health (Cam rất tốt cho sức khỏe).
3. Trước danh từ trừu tượng, trừ phi danh từ đó chỉ một trường hợp cá biệt.
Eg: Men fear death (Con người sợ cái chết)
Nhưng:
The death of his father made him completely hopeless.
4. Sau tính từ sở hữu (possessive adjective) hoặc sau danh từ ở sở hữu cách (possessive case).
Eg: My friend, không phải “my the friend”;
The girl's mother
5. Trước tên các bữa ăn dùng theo nghĩa tổng quát
Eg: Dinner is served at 6:00 (not: The dinner)
They invited some friends to dinner.
Nhưng:
Eg: The wedding breakfast was held in a beautiful garden
6. Trước các tước hiệu
Eg: President Roosevelt (Tổng thống Roosevelt)
King Louis XIV of France (Vua Louis XIV của Pháp)
7. Trong các trường hợp sau đây
Eg: Women are always fond of music (Phụ nữ luôn thích âm nhạc)
Come by car/by bus (Đến bằng xe ôtô/xe búyt)
In spring/in autumn (Vào mùa xuân/mùa thu), last night (đêm qua), next year(năm
tới), from beginning to end (từ đầu tới cuối), from left to right (từ trái sang phải).
To play golf/chess/cards (chơi gôn/ đánh cờ/đánh bài)
Lưu ý
- Nature mang nghĩa "Tự nhiên , thiên nhiên " thì không dùng the.
Eg: According to the laws of nature (Theo quy luật tự nhiên)
They couldn't tolerate city life anymore and went back to nature (Họ không chịu nổi đời
sống thành thị nữa và trở về với thiên nhiên)
He listened to the radio nhưng He watched television ) ; hoặc He heard it on the radio

CÂU HỎI)
1. Dạng câu hỏi trả lời Yes or No (Yes/No question)
1.1 Câu tường thuật dạng này thường áp dụng cho các câu hỏi bắt đầu bằng động từ Tobe hoặc
trợ động từ (Do/does/did…) trong tiếng Anh. Vẫn biến đổi bình thường như ở loại câu tường
thuật của câu phát biểu. Tuy nhiên cần lưu ý một vài điểm quan trọng.
1.2 Từ tường thuật có thể dùng ask (hỏi), inquire (hỏi thăm), wonder (tự hỏi), want to
know (muốn biết)…
says/say to + O -> asks/ask + O
said to + O -> asked + O.
1.3 Dùng “If” hoặc “Whether” ngay sau các động từ chính nhằm thể hiện nghi vấn là có hay
không.
*Cấu trúc chính:
S + ASKED + (SB) + IF/WHETHER + S + V

→ The boss asked me if/ whether I wanted to give a presentation.

2.1 Đây cũng là dạng câu hỏi lấy thông tin và không phải trả lời Yes/No. Câu hỏi Wh-
