In the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the delegitimation of Israel involves
the negotiation of values, laws and complex international relations. Israeli values are often undermined in various ways, as critics highlight issues such as settlement expansion, alleged human rights violations and the treatment of Palestinians. This targets the basic principles of Israeli identity and challenges the state’s goal of democracy, equality and its protection. Lawfare, the legal system used to wage war, is a way of denying legitimacy to Israel. International legal forums like the International Criminal Court prosecute war crimes and violations of international law against Israel. Critics say this legal approach focuses disproportionately on Israel, sometimes ignoring the intensity of the conflict and the behavior of other actors involved. Within the United Nations (UN), the treatment of Israel has been a contentious issue. Even though the UN aims to uphold the principles of fairness and justice, it is disproportionately targeting Israel. A resolution adopted in 2017 (A/RES/ES-1) is a case in point. It criticized Israeli settlers as a major obstacle to peace, sparking accusations of unfairly singling out Israel without addressing other causes of the conflict. This particular resolution may be considered unfair because it places the blame solely on Israel, neglecting the role of Palestinian leadership and the broader historical context. Critics argue that a more balanced approach should consider the responsibilities of all parties involved and promote dialogue rather than amplifying tensions. Addressing the complexity of the Israel-Palestine conflict requires a basic understanding of historical, political, and cultural factors, moving beyond simplistic resolutions that may maintain the cycle of blame without achieving genuine peace and reconciliation. However the delegitimation of Israel is not only a matter of legal and diplomatic disputes, but also a result of social and cultural factors that shape the perceptions of Israelis and Palestinians.
