TITLE FOR SUMMARY: EMERGING ECONOMIES SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

Introduction:
In the contemporary global economic landscape, the rise of emerging economies such as Brazil,
China, India, and others has commanded attention and reshaped traditional narratives. Coined
by Jim O'Neill of Goldman Sachs in 2001, the term "BRIC" (later extended to BRICS with the
inclusion of South Africa) propelled these nations from the periphery to the forefront of
economic discourse. This elevation in status signifies a transition from being labeled merely as
"developing" to attaining a level of economic credibility and influence on par with established
powers. Notably, the collective GDP share of emerging economies surged from approximately
31% in 1980 to a commanding 50.4% by 2013, as per IMF data. This meteoric rise, led by
economic powerhouses like China, which now claims the mantle of the world's second-largest
economy, and India, vying closely behind as one of the fastest-growing economies, has not only
altered the global economic landscape but also reshaped the dynamics of global supply chains.
Supply Chain Challenges and Research Opportunities:
However, this transformative economic shift has not been without its challenges, particularly in
the realm of supply chain management. Emerging economies grapple with a host of logistical
hurdles that impede the smooth functioning of supply chains. Chief among these challenges are
the difficulties in acquiring land for industrial development, exacerbated by regulatory
complexities and competing land-use priorities. Additionally, inadequate road infrastructure
poses significant obstacles to efficient transportation and logistics operations, hindering timely
delivery and increasing costs. The scarcity of modern warehousing facilities further exacerbates
these challenges, impacting inventory management and distribution efficiency. Moreover, the
unreliable supply of electricity adds another layer of complexity, disrupting manufacturing
operations and necessitating costly backup solutions.
Despite these formidable challenges, there exists a wealth of opportunities for research and
improvement in supply chain management practices within emerging economies. Comparative
studies analyzing supply chain practices across nations offer valuable insights into best practices,
challenges, and opportunities for improvement. Furthermore, exploring the influence of cultural
and infrastructural factors on supply chain performance can provide crucial insights into strategic
decision-making and policy formulation. Investigating the role of the bottom-of-the-pyramid
segment in supply chains and analyzing electronic retailing's impact offer additional avenues for
innovative research and solutions. By addressing these challenges and leveraging research
opportunities, stakeholders can navigate the complexities of supply chain management and
capitalize on emerging market opportunities.
Special Issue Topics and Conclusion:
The special issue discussed in the article encapsulates these themes, covering a range of topics
crucial to understanding and enhancing supply chain management in emerging economies. From
exploring the bottom-of-the-pyramid segment's role in supply chains to investigating Omni-
channel retailing, outbound logistics in the automotive industry, crop diversification in
agriculture, and airport congestion alleviation, each topic offers valuable insights into the
complexities and opportunities within emerging markets. Ultimately, the article underscores the
importance of addressing supply chain dynamics in emerging economies to harness their growth
potential and foster sustainable development. By confronting challenges head-on and leveraging
research opportunities, stakeholders can navigate the complexities of supply chain management
and capitalize on emerging market opportunities to drive inclusive growth and economic
prosperity.
