6 ARMD DIV TRG NOTE NO 47/2001

MOTIVATION AND LEADERSHIP

Intro
1. Study of military history reveals that the outcome of military conflicts has
always centered upon the inter-relationship of soldiery, leadership and
motivation. However, no elm affects the result of a conflict with such telling
impact as does the motivation. Motivation and morale play a pivotal role in the
fighting capabilities of any Army. No fighting machinery can build up its optimum
professional capabilities without paying due emphasis to these intangibles which
have a marked bg on combat behaviour. Owing to a marked disparity in size and
resource, Pakistan Army can not match its adversary in number or weaponry. To
compensate for our problem in number, we need a force multiplier. Motivation to
overcome odds has frequently been used by the comds as a force multiplier and
to con and regulate the behaviour of their tps in combat situations. For a soldier
in the battle situation, motivation is no less imp than his personal wpn itself. It
equips him with that invisible str which helps him in overcoming his fears and
prepares him for supreme sacrifice. Therefore, providing environment conducive
to taking every soldier to the highest pitch of motivation and moral cmt to the
profession, is one of the basic tasks and obligations of a comd.

Aim
2. The aim of this Trg Note is to provide some guide-lines on the overall and
important subj of motivation and leadership.

Motivation
3. We are most fortunate in having overwhelming faith on our side and also
the good quality of our soldiers. We thus have fine material to build on for
purposes of motivating our tps. The rest, and in fact the most difficult yet nec task
is to provide the correct type of leadership and here again we have favourable
conditions for winning over the whole hearted sp of our tps because our cause is
just and our faith is one. We have good junior officers who have the potential for
providing the nec leadership provided they acquire the nec knowledge pertaining
to their duties and are properly guided along correct and decent lines by their
Commanding Officers. This is a continuous process and a laborious task yet
most essential.

Leadership
4. Although the advantages we have are real blessings, for purposes of
motivation, good and practical leaders are vital so as to present our aims and
ideals into something tangible and eff, because ‘God only helps those who help
themselves’. Those who are responsible for commanding and trg tps must
therefore be patriotic, practical, and progressive in their out look. In other words
they must be good leaders in every sense of the word.

5. The mission normally given to an Armd Fmn demands of it a very high std
of junior leadership spec so upto sqn lvl, and it is this req on which we must focus
our full and complete attention. In order to match the quality of leadership with
the imp of our mission, it is nec for Commanders at all lvls to train their men in
the fol, in addn of course to full 100% in their professional subjs:-
a. Self-confidence and determination based on the will power to carry
out the asg msn. The fol theme from poet Iqbal will certainly help and
it is advised that it should be written down very neatly in the chest
pocket notebook of all offrs of this fmn. It is a noble ideal towards
which we must all strive:-
b. In addn, the fol beautiful and meaningful poem from kipling and called
by the title of ‘If’ should also find a prominent place in our offrs’
Pocket Note Book because it is extremely inspiring and if its true spirit
is fol, the offr and ldr will be able to sweep all before him in a crisis,
without a shadow of doubt.

‘IF’
(By Kipling)

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tried by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated don’t look too good, not talk too wise,
And yet don’t look too good, not talk too wise,
If you can dream and not make dreams your master;
If you can think and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build’em up with worn out tools,
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch and toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the will which says the them; ‘Hold on:’
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue
Or walk with Kings nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And what is more you’ll be a Men, my son:

Progress
6. Remember nothing in life is ever static. We either go fwd or else
unfortunately slip backwards. This is a universal and recognized law of nature.
Our aim should therefore always be to do the former ie to go fwd. Always
remember this. If you do so, you can seldom go wrong.

7. Both Iqbal’s couplet quoted in this Note and Kipling’s ‘If’ also given above,
will help you in a crisis and you will miraculously find ‘apparent’ and so called
‘great’ difficulties just melting away before your ever increasing will power.
