homework. I think you’re the best when I’m totally stressed, preparing and cramming all night for a
test. But, I see that we are in a very similar stage of life with kids in HS. Just twenty minutes won’t
make that much difference anyway. In both cases, I’m using language to solve a problem or achieve
a goal. It used to be that all poetry was rhyming and metrical until the late 1800s, so Walt Whitman
and poets like that said no, poetry doesn’t have to conform to these strictures. Stop by any time

Lots of contributors to this anthology where also there. Favorite children's poet: I am a huge fan of
Dennis Lee, the author of Alligator Pie. Being children's poems, many make fun of school life.
Favorite color: My favorite colors are puce, ochre, and vermilion because I love the way they sound.
So I know very clearly what kids like and what kinds of jokes they’ll get and what they won’t get.
Every couple of weeks, we go to the movies and then go out afterward to discuss. I can walk into a
school and six hours later I can walk out of there and I’ve got every kid in that school really excited
and wanting to read and believing they can write. By that I mean the actual physical getting there:
organizing all the logistics and flying and renting cars and staying in hotels and being away from my

Matthew did. The poet uses a playful tone and vivid imagery to bring the absurd concoction to life,
indirectly expressing the overwhelm and distaste that students may feel towards excessive homework.
There are wonderful, rich poems of the past.but today's kids might not connect with them.

often seen as very intimidating. I am already a fan of Kenn's, but your post has made me love him
more. Kenn Nesbitt is the author of several collections of funny poetry for kids. I'm not writing as
much of the funny stuff these days, but I still think Kenn is the bee's knees when it comes to
introducing children to poetry.

Thank you, Monica— all's well. Favorite teacher in school: Mr. Pearson, my eighth-grade English
teacher, because he introduced us to horror and science fiction stories, and because he showed us
