REMINDER ON HOW TO WRITE YOUR MISE-EN-SCENE.

❑ In this sequence, you will be writing your first mise-en-scene. Mise-en-scene refers to the
composition of the different frames in the sequence.
In each mis-en-scene you should pay particular attention to the following:
❑ Lighting, colour, costume, props, shots and angles- all in relation to the theme displayed in the
different images.

❑ Remember that when you write a mise-en-scene, you need to scan each image from left to
right and decide why the director has chosen to include every element in the given frame.

❑ Your mise-en-scene is like mini essay about the frames you are given from a particular
sequence. Aim to give your response structure as opposed to jumping from one still to
another. This is how your mis-en-scene should be structured:

1. Contextualise the frames (Group all the frames together and write where they are taking
place).

2. Link the frames to a particular theme from the film. (Some of the themes do interlink)

3. Tackle each image at a time.

4. Do NOT put bullet points. You may leave a line between the discussions of each frame if you
wish)

AN EXAMPLE OF A MIS-EN-SCENE QUESTION:

Carefully examine images A to D below and write a mise-en-scene discussing the

effectiveness of each frame within the film. Use the techniques of lighting and colour,
as well as an analysis of the camera shots and camera angles used in your
response. (10 Marks)
