Waste Segregation

This is the physical separation of waste materials, according to their


general physical and chemical nature. This is important from a
safety point of view. Segregation also allows wastes of a similar
type to be combined, thus simplifying storage and disposal
arrangements.
It is important that waste is properly segregated into different
types, so that opportunities for re-use and recycling are not
compromised by, for example, mixing hazardous and non- hazardous
wastes.

Segregation of waste at the construction site:


• Plastic – Grey;
• Metal – Red
• Wood – Light Blue;
• Green – Light Green;
• Concrete/ Inert debris – White;
• Glass – Green;
• Asphalt – Dark Blue;
• General Domestic/ Food waste – Yellow;
• General Construction/ Mixed Waste – Dark Green;
• Electronic (without hazardous materials) – Beige;
• Other non-hazardous waste (tyres) – Purple;
• Used oil – Black;
• Used oil filters – Black;
• Contaminated material – Black;
• Batteries – Black;
• Other Electronic (containing hazardous materials) – Black;
• Medical – Orange

Segregation will follow the format in the waste categories

• Hazardous Waste
