Abstract
Turmeric is a plant that is widely cultivated in Asia. Its use as a herbal medicine has been
recognized and its safety is guaranteed. Curcumin is one of the main biologically active
components contained in turmeric. Curcumin is usually referred to as 1,7-bis(4-hydroxy-3-
methoxyphenyl)-1,6 heptadiene-3,5-dione or also referred to as "curcumin I". Various studies
show that curcumin has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin inhibits
microbial growth, disrupts cell membranes, and causes early apoptosis so it is effective in
treating skin infections caused by bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Its ability to inhibit biosynthesis
and various molecular pathways in inflammation, including leukotriene, phospholipase,
collagenase, nitric oxide, hyaluronidase, elastase, protein, monocyte chemoattractant-1 (MCP-1)
which will be induced by interferon, interleukin, and tumor necrosis factor makes Turmeric has
anti-inflammatory properties. Research conducted by Indriani et al in 2018 proved that turmeric
extract has inhibitory activity against inflammation.

Conclusions
Curcumin is the main biologically active
component in turmeric which has anti-
inflammatory properties. Its ability to inhibit
the biosynthesis of various inflammatory
molecular pathways, including leukotrienes,
phospholipase, collagenase, nitric oxysite
(NO), hyaluronidase, elastase, protein,
monocyte chemoattractant-1 (MCP-1),
which can be induced by interferon,
interleukin, and tumor necrosis factor , is a
characteristic of the anti-inflammatory
properties of the curcumin compound in
turmeric.
