 The 2047 Clarion Call: Insurance for All
National Insurance Academy (NIA), Pune, was established in 1980 by the Public Sector Insurance
Companies (LIC of India, GIC of India, The New India Assurance Company Ltd., The United India Insurance
Company Ltd., The National Insurance Company Ltd., and The Oriental Insurance Company Ltd.) under the
aegis of Ministry of Finance, Government of India.

Right from the formative years, NIA has been creating and developing the knowledge in Insurance,
Pension and allied areas by undertaking various activities like organizing Management Development
Programme for the more than 8000 Top, Middle Level & First Level Executives of the insurance industry
consistently on an annual basis. The Academy is also running a Post Graduate Diploma in Management
(PGDM), where, along with the General Management subjects, the impetus is on imparting Domain
Knowledge in Risk Management and Insurance Coverage in a holistic manner. Its close association with
the Insurance Industry provides the ‘real life’ reference to its Training, Education, Research Activities and
Consultancy Services. This has ensured that the present industry leaders pass on the baton of pragmatic
insights to the future torch-bearers of insurance. It is a matter of pride and honour for the Academy that
more than 1000 of its alumni are holding key positions in the industry, in India & abroad.

NIA is pleased to present the 25 Annual Sir C D Deskmukh Memorial Seminar on Tuesday, the 16th of
January, 2024, to commemorate the legendary Sir C. D. Deshmukh. Late Sir C D Deshmukh (1896 – 1982)
was an eminent Scholar, educationist, and a pioneer in the Insurance & Financial arena. He was CIE, ICS, an
Indian Civil Servant and the first Indian to be appointed as the Governor of Reserve Bank of India in 1943.
He was the Finance Minister of India from 1950 to 1956 and played a stellar role in the integration and
amalgamation of 245 companies [i.e. 154 Indian Insurance Companies, 16 Foreign Insurance Companies
and 75 Provident Societies] into one Life Insurance Corporation of India that came into existence on 1st
September, 1956, which is a defining moment in the Indian Insurance history.

The Silver Jubilee Seminar

In keeping with the spirit of Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the theme of the Silver Jubilee Sir C D Deshmukh
Seminar is “The 2047 Clarion Call: Insurance for all”. The seminar shall be a forum for the top industry
experts to deliberate upon the fast-changing customer demands and perspectives by sharing futuristic
and innovative ideas as well drawing the roadmap which would enable us in making Insurance Coverage
every man’s cup of tea when our beloved country soaks itself in the Independence Centenary
Celebrations.

 The Seminar

While the Plenary Session will be resonating on the ‘Independence Centenary vis-à-vis Insurance’ theme, to add to the
flavour, there will also be deliberations by eminent delegates from amongst Industry Leaders including Actuaries having
loads of experience in the Indian and global contexts on the following sub-themes:
[A] Technological Integration for Life Insurance Penetration
[B] Insurance Issues and Opportunities in Silver Economy
[C] Innovative Disruption for Customer Engagement
We shall also be roping in Industry Influencers and Insurance Professionals and, blending with the distinguished guests,
there will be the host of young minds pursuing their PGDM Course at the Academy. We are confident that this Industry-
Academia connect will, unambiguously, light up the path leading to the fulfilment of the 2047 Vision of IRDAI!
