14. Algae are part of aquatic ecosystems. However, they can grow rapidly because nutrients
such as nitrogen and phosphorus are leached from agricultural areas near bodies of water.
The probability of leaching increases when precipitation occurs frequently and leads to algal
bloom. Which of the following options incorrectly explains the environmental effect of algal
bloom?

plants decreases.
B. Fish adapt by eating algae as nutritious food, so the fish populations eventually increase.
C. Dissolved oxygen levels decrease and disrupt the food chain in aquatic ecosystems.
D. Red tides may occur because some algae can produce toxins, so organisms in the higher

spoon in hot water and rubbed it over the dry ice as illustrated below. As soon as she rubbed
it, she heard screeching sounds from the dry ice.

Which of the following options correctly explains why there were screeching sounds coming
from the dry ice?

A. The dry ice evaporated quickly when rubbed with a metal spoon, creating a rapid vapor
pressure that vibrated the spoon and produced a sound.
B. The sublimation was accelerated when the hot metal spoon rubbed against the dry ice, so
the released carbon dioxide vibrated the spoon rapidly and produced a sound.
C. The dry ice melted on contact with the hot spoon and then evaporated into gas due to
the high-temperature differences, vibrating the air and producing a sound.
D. The dry ice evaporated and sublimed at the same time, creating a rapid phase change and
pressure on the hot metal spoon so that it vibrated and produced a sound.
