The secret between translation and ideology

In today’s society, there are a lot of translations of books, Tv series, and encyclopedias
both for children and adults but less people think and know that these translations are
mostly done in order to change our way of thinking or to emphasize something as a
normal thing for us. All these things are done to change our ideology and has an
ideology and power relationship behind it, so everything we watch read or listen is
written for a purpose. First let’s start with the definition of ideology, ideology has a lot
of definitions but the most important one in my opinion is: ideology is the way of
thinking of people. I believe that ideology and translation of media texts are related
because a person uses his power to re-write a text according to his ideology and this is
the reason of variety of the same texts.

Lefevere says that in the act of translation there are two important components which
decide and change the way the text will be translated. The first one is professionals
which are in the literary system like translators, boss, readers, etc. and the second one is
patronage which is outside the literary system and about ideology. Also, there is a
phenomenon that helped me to agree and understand what Lefevere was saying.
Whenever I watch news, I realized that the same news is showed to the people in
different perspectives in different channels for example one channel shows a guy as a
good person and try to emphasize this to the people and the other one shows him as a
bad person and try to emphasize this to the people. So, then I realized that power and
ideology are shaping what we call media texts for a specific purpose. The same
phenomenon is happening around the world. For example, of we look at books, texts, or
audio- visual content in the west we can see that they draw the Turkish people in a
specific way in everywhere. A man with a hat and mustache and a woman with hijab
covering all of her body trying to emphasize that these people are backward and to
change the perceptive of thinking of people toward Turkish people to accomplish their
purposes and this is exactly how is the relation between ideology and media texts, media
texts are used as a tool to impose a specific ideology.

So, to sum up everything has been stated so far in the past I was wondering about why
there are a lot of copies of the same book or why there are too many variations of the
same show with little differences but after reading and studying about ideology, its
relationship with texts and Lefevere’s theory I understood why there are too many
copies of books, tv series and same news but in different perspectives. It became obvious
to me that there is a power and ideology behind these texts, and no one is re-writing
without a purpose which is maybe change our ideology, empathizes something or being
in someone’s side.
