THE KITE RUNNER

SUMMARY CHAPTER 14 - 25

Few years after the death of Baba Amir is called by Rahim Khan where he tells him,
“There is a way to be good again” and calls him to Pakistan. So, Amir decides to go to
Pakistan as soon as possible. When Amir meets Rahim Khan, he describes him how
the people in Kabul are struggling to live and how the Taliban were treated as heroes.
Rahim Khan tells Amir the whole story about Hassan, his wife and Sohrab. He informs
him how skillful Shorab is with a slingshot. Rahim Khan even shows Amir the picture of
Hassan and Sohrab. With the picture there is a letter from Hassan to Amir as well.
In the letter Hassan tells Amir that he takes Sohrab to sit under the pomegranate tree
and reads stories to him and much more. After Amir reads the letter, Rahim Khan tells
him that the letter was written six months ago and one month ago Taliban arrived at the
house and eventually killed him and his wife Farzana by accusing them of lying being a
Hazara.

Amir finds out that Sohrab is now in an orphanage. Rahim Khan asks Amir to go to
Kabul and bring Sohrab to Pakistan. Rahim Khan also tells Amir that Baba was
Hassan's biological father. Amir gets a shock and takes some time to process. Amir
realizes that Rahim Khan called him to Pakistan not just for Amir’s sins but for Baba's
too. Rescuing Sohrab was now the only opportunity Amir would ever get to ask
forgiveness for his sins.

Amir now is on his way to Kabul with Farid, his car driver. Rahim Khan gave Amir a fake
beard to appear Taliban-friendly. For the night they stay at Farid’s brother’s house.
When they reach Kabul, Amir is shocked when he sees the current condition of Kabul
with beggars and everywhere. Amir gives a beggar some money and he provides them
with directions to the orphanage. When they get to the orphanage, the owner, Zaman
tells that he doesn’t know about Sohrab and tells that a Taliban arrive every month or
two with money and take a child. Zaman tells them where to find the Taliban and asks
them to leave.

The next day, Amir and Farid go to the Stadium to find the Taliban leader. At halftime of
the soccer game, the red trucks of Taliban enter the field with two people accused of
adultery. Using the word of God as their excuse, the Taliban murder both the man and
the woman, and Farid is able to successfully arrange a meeting with the Talib who
wears the black sunglasses. When Amir and Farid arrive at the place, Farid decides to
wait in the car. Amir knocks the door and goes inside. In the meeting with the Talib Amir
is caught with the fake beard which he had to take off. Amir tells that he is only here for
Sohrab, and eventually Sohrab is called. The Talib sends his guards away, and Amir
realizes that the Talib is Assef.
Assef allows Amir to take Sohrab but not for free, Amir needs to earn him. Assef calls
his guards and commands them not to enter the room no matter what they hear, and he
tells Amir that if he manages to walk out of the room, he has earned freedom. After the
guards leave, they both have a fight where Amir is goes in and out of consciousness. As
Assef is getting ready to beat him again, Sohrab says, "Bas" with a slingshot aimed at
Assef's face. Sohrab eventually hits Assef with the slingshot into his eye. Assef is
screaming in pain as Amir and Sohrab exit, get into the car and rum away.

Amir wakes up in a hospital where he is told about his injuries. Later Amir also comes to
know that Rahim Khan had gone and he had left a letter for him. Amir’s plan is now to
drop Sohrab at the Cadwell’s orphanage, but when Farid arrives, he tells Amir that the
Caldwell’s never existed. Amir finally calls home and he tells Soraya everything that has
occurred. Still being in Pakistan, Amir turns to prayer, begging for forgiveness. Amir
apologizes to Sohrab and explains how he will be able to get Sohrab to America without
needing to send him to an orphanage.

Finally, Amir and Sohrab manage to get to America. On the airport Soraya greets Amir
and Sohrab. That night, the General asks during the dinner about why a Hazara boy is
living with his daughter, and Amir tells him that the boy is his nephew, his name is
Sohrab, and tells him that he would never refer to him as "Hazara boy" again.

Later, Amir purchases a kite and tells Sohrab about Hassan being the best kite runner
in all of Kabul. As Amir begins to fly the kite Sohrab moves next to him and Amir hands
over the string to Sohrab. Sohrab cuts a kite and as Amir asks that if he should run the
kite for him, Sohrab gives a nod and Amir runs for it by saying "For you, a thousand
times over."
