1 Reading: Carolina writes an email to her

friend about work

Hi Cristina,
I am sorry I haven’t called you for so long. How are you?
How is your new apartment?
I have been very busy at work. I arrive at the office at 7
am and leave at around 6:30 pm. I just get half an our for
lunch and a five-minute break in the morning and in the
afternoon. I am very tired when I get home so I just eat,
watch some television and go to bed. In the office, I am on
the phone all day, listening to customer complaints and
entering them into our computer system. At the end of the
day I have to write a summary of all the calls I received
during the day and give my boss a status on the complaints
that are not yet resolved.
I do not know how much longer I can do this. I need a
vacation, or even better, I need another job!
I’ll call you this weekend.

amigo sobre el trabajo

Hola Cristina ,
Lamento que no te he llamado por tanto tiempo. Como estais vosotros? ¿Cómo
es su nuevo apartamento?
He estado muy ocupado en el trabajo . Llego a la oficina a las 7 de la mañana y
salgo a las 6:30 . Acabo de llegar de media nuestra para el almuerzo y un
descanso de cinco minutos en la mañana y en la tarde. Estoy muy cansado
cuando llego a casa , así que sólo comer, ver un poco de televisión y me voy a
la cama . En la oficina, estoy en el teléfono todo el día , escuchando quejas de
los clientes y de introducirlas en nuestro sistema informático . Al final del día
tengo que escribir un resumen de todas las llamadas que he recibido durante el
día y dar a mi jefe un estado sobre las quejas que aún no se han resuelto .
No sé cuánto tiempo más podré hacer esto. Necesito unas vacaciones , o
incluso mejor , necesito otro trabajo !
Te llamaré este fin de semana .

2 Reading: SUSAN´S JOB

I’m a social worker,I like working with families and kids,It’s very
stressful. Because we have to fill out a lot of papers, and because it’s
very serious work.
I speak spanish, I use my spanish in my job every day, actually. I work
with a lot of Spanish speaking families. And it’s a big asset that I speak
Spanish in my job. I´m a social worker, I would like maybe teaching
spanish.
In the evening,

I work as a cashier at a supermarket in my neighborhood. Even though

I love teaching, it doesn’t pay very well and I am forced to work at a
second job to make ends meet as I have three children to provide for.
When they get back from school, I am still at work, so my eldest
daughter, Karla, makes sure they all begin doing their homework. She
also prepares something for them to eat, if they are hungry. When I get
home I help the kids with their homework and get them to bed.

2 Lectura: SUSAN'S TRABAJO

Soy un trabajador social, me gusta trabajar con las familias y los niños, es muy
estresante . Debido a que tenemos que llenar un montón de papeles, y porque
es un trabajo muy serio.

Hablo español , yo uso mi español en mi trabajo todos los días , en realidad. Yo

trabajo con una gran cantidad de familias de habla hispana . Y es una gran
ventaja que yo hablo español en mi trabajo . Soy un trabajador social , me
gustaría tal vez la enseñanza de español .
Por la noche,
Yo trabajo como cajera en un supermercado de mi barrio . A pesar de que me
encanta enseñar , que no paga muy bien y me veo obligado a trabajar en un
segundo empleo para llegar a fin de cumplir con lo que tengo tres hijos que
mantener. Cuando vuelvan de la escuela , todavía estoy en el trabajo, así que
mi hija mayor, Karla , se asegura de que todos empiezan hacer los deberes .
También prepara algo para que coman , si tienen hambre . Cuando llego a
casa me ayudo a los niños con sus tareas y los consigo a la cama .

3 Reading: Presidential Travel

The president of the United States has a very important job. In order
to do his job he needs to travel a lot. He can't travel in a regular car
or airplane because it's not safe. When he needs to fly he can take
one of two airplanes that are available to him. When he is in one of
the airplanes, that airplane is designated "Air Force One."

Air Force One has a presidential stateroom, a dressing room and

shower, a conference/dining room, two kitchens, a presidential
office, a medical treatment room, secretarial offices, six bathrooms,
and 84 telephones.

The president can also fly in Marine One, his presidential helicopter.
Like Air Force One, Marine One can be one of several helicopters.
When the president is aboard it is designated Marine One.

When the president travels by car he can travel in one of many

limousines. He usually travels in a "motorcade." A "motorcade" is a
group of cars that include the president's limousine and other Secret
Service vehicles to provide security.

4 Reading: Tom Loveless

Tom Loveless is from England. His parents and brothers live in
Manchester, but he lives in Oakham, a small rural town two hours from
London.
He is thirty years old and works at Oakham School. He teaches Foreign
Languages; German and French. Everyday, from Monday to Saturday,
he gets up at 7:00 in the morning, his lessons at school start at 8:30.He
loves his work because he likes languages and enjoys teaching to young
people. In addition, those students at Oakham school are really
responsible and interested in their education.

He lives with his wife in a small house near the school. His wife´s name
is Emily and she a French teacher too. They usually have lunch at
school, but they always have dinner together at home.
On Saturday afternoon, Tom, his wife, and some of their friends
usually go to Rutlan water. Tom´s friends are really nice. Antonio likes
cycling. Beatrice prefers walking and Diana loves reading there. Tom
never gets up early on Sundays. He usually has lunch with his wife
Emily in Stanford or Leicester, there are beautiful towns near Oakham.

In the evening, they sometimes go to the pub to have some drinks and
chat with their friends at home.
