Grade: Kindergarten Length of Lesson: 45 min

The Big Idea: How can you solve subtraction word problems and complete the equation?

Domain:
Operations and Algebraic Thinking

Cluster:
Understand addition as putting together and adding to and understand subtraction as taking
apart and taking from.

Standard:
Fluently add and subtract within 5.

Specific Objective:
The student will demonstrate mastery of the lesson’s standard by being about to subtract by
acting out subtraction problems with 75% accuracy as measured by the unit test.

Method(s):
Explicit instruction, whole group, technology, modeling.

Materials/Equipment/Technology/Community Resources:
Pencil, MathGo workbook, Elmo, smartboard, YouTube, trashcan, basketball, boomcards.

Direct Instruction/Warm-Up Activity/Presentation/Model Lesson/Make Connections:

The teacher will play an education subtraction video on YouTube
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSdVJE05_AE) . The teacher will then model the first
problem on page 339 in their GoMath workbooks. The teacher will utilize the cross-out method
to show subtraction.

Guided Practice:
The teacher will guide the students through problems 2 and 3 on page 339. The students will use
the cross-out method to solve the problems.
Independent Practice:
The students will complete page 340 in the Go math books. The teacher will read the directions
and walk around to check the students work. The teacher will play trashketball with the students
using word problems on boom cards (https://wow.boomlearning.com/search?
collection=Decks&keyword=subtraction&grades[]=13&sort=price&order=1). Each student will
solve problems for a chance to win points for their team.

Differentiation:(You need to address in your differentiation of the lesson how you will meet
the needs of the 3 Tiers. Be specific!)
Tier 1 Learners:
These students will likely not need extra help and will understand all information from
the lesson. They will likely work ahead on the guided practice and not have any
questions.

Tier 2 Learners:
These students will need extra help with the guided practice, they will be paired with
students from tier one. These students will benefit from extra help during learning centers
to master concepts and skills.

Tier 3 Learners:
These students will require the most help from the teacher. These students will benefit
from one-on-one assistance during the lesson and learning centers. These students will be
recommended for some type of remediation like after school tutoring.

Evaluation/Assessment:
Summative: The students will complete a unit test on subtraction.
Formative: The teacher will assess the students during the exit ticket and during independent
practice.

Wrap-Up(Lesson Closure) /Concluding Activity:

The teacher will put subtraction problems in a pocket chart. The teacher will have the answers
laid out on the table and students will be called to the front to match the answer to the problem.
