Sizes:

0-3 Months, 3-12 Months, 1-2 Years (toddler), 3-12 Years (child), Teen/Women, Men

Recommended head circumference for each size:

0-3 Months – 13-15” 3-12 Years – 19-21”

3-12 Months – 15-18” Teen/Women – 21-22″

1-2 Years – 18-19” Men – 23-24”

Note on the design: You will begin your hat in the main color (Walnut Tweed). Begin
following the chart on the first K all row, after you have completed the ribbing. This can
be found on the 2nd last page of the pattern. Repeat the chart row until you get to the
end of each round. The chart is the same for all sizes. In the pattern, you will see it says
to “K all until your work measures ___” total length”. This normally takes 20-22 k all rows
(plus the brim) to complete the recommended length for each size with the given gauge.
The chart is 22 rows. Once you have completed the chart, measure your work. If you
have not yet reached the recommended height, continue working in your main color. If
your work happens to measures slightly longer than the recommended length, that is ok.
You can either start decreasing after you finish the chart or end the chart early.

Ribbing Options: The brown hat is made with a K1P1 ribbing. The two colored hats are
made with a K2P2 ribbing. The pattern is made with K2P2 but the thinner ribbing also
works up great.

Making The Ears

Use the same size needles you used for the main section of the hat (not the brim). Cast
on 18 stitches. Leave at least a 6 inch tail to attach the ear onto the hat.

Row 1-5: K all (18 sts). Turn.

Row 6 – Sl st, K2tog, K5, K2tog, K5, K2tog, Sl st. (15 stitches)

Row 7 – K2tog, K2, K2tog, K3, K2tog, K2, K2tog. (11 stitches)

Row 8 – K2tog, K1, K2tog, K1, K2tog, K1, K2tog (7 stitches)

Row 9 – K2tog, K3, K2tog (5 stitches)

Row 10 – K2tog, K1, K2tog (3 stitches)

Row 11 – K2tog, K1 (2 stitches)

Row 12 – Ktog (1 stitch)

Cut tail, leaving 6 inches to attach ear onto hat. Pull the tail through the remaining stitch.
Make two ears.

Using a darning needle, weave the 1 st tail (attached at the corner) along the bottom edge
of the ear, passing the 2 nd tail and continuing to the other corner. Pull the tail to shape
the ear into a half circle.

Attach the ear to the edge of the hat. Weave the tail in and out all along the base of the
ear and hat to secure it properly. Make sure to tack the corners of the ear to keep it in
place and give it a nice shape.

Repeat for the second ear, making sure they are placed evenly on the hat.

Attach a button or leather tag (optional).

end. Make two pompom using a pompom maker and attach to the top of the hat. See
below for more information on attaching the pompoms.

Making & Attaching the pompoms:

Secure the tail at the top where you completed the hat before attaching the pompoms.
To ensure your two pompoms are symmetrical and the same size, wrap the yarn around
the pompom maker the same number of times for each pompom. I wrap it around
enough times that it is snug when closing the pompom maker after wrapping. When
tying off your pompom, make sure the ends of that piece of yarn are long enough to
attach to the hat. Once made and tied off, trim the pompom using sharp scissors.
When attaching the pompoms, you want the two end pieces to weave into the hat from
top to bottom, rather than side to side. This helps the pompom to stay in place and
doesn’t move around as much when it is being worn. I like to keep 3 bars between the
two gaps where I weave in the pompom ends. I start mine one or two bars below the
center of the hat, depending on which size hat I am making (1 bar for sizes Newborn to
6-12 Months, two bars for the larger sizes).

Tie the two ends very tightly on the inside several times to ensure it does not come
undone. Next insert the end into your darning needle and poke it back through the
pompom and pull through. Trim the end so that it is even with the rest of the pompom.
Repeat for the second end. When attaching the second pompom, make sure they are
even before doing the final ties and make adjustments if needed.

Making The Ears

Use the same size needles you used for the main section of the hat (not the brim).

Outer Ear (make 2):

Cast on 12 in main color.

Row 1 – Purl. Turn after completing each row.

Row 2 – Knit

Row 3 – Purl

Row 4 – Knit

Row 5 – Purl

Row 6 – Knit

Row 7 – Purl

Row 8 – K1, K2tog, K6, K2tog, K1 (10 left)

Row 9 – Pearl

Row 10 – K2tog 5 times (5 left)

Cut yarn and weave through the remaining 5 stitches. After, weave through the 1 st stitch
again to secure all the stitches and create a round shape at the top.

Inner Ear (make 2):

Cast on 10 in contrast color.

Row 1 – Knit. Turn after completing each row.

Row 2 – Purl

Row 3 – Knit

Row 4 – Purl

Row 5 – K1, K2tog, K4, K2tog, K1 (8 left)

Row 6 – Purl

Row 7 – K2tog 4 times (4 left).

Cut yarn and weave through the remaining 4 stitches. After, weave through the 1 st stitch
again to secure all the stitches and create a round shape at the top.
Attaching The Ears:

Place the inner and outer ear pieces together. The purl sides go on the inside (touching
one another) and the knit sides facing the outside. The outer ear should frame the inner
ear.

Using the contrast color tail, begin stitching the two pieces together. When picking up on
the inner ear, insert your needle into the turn stitches. When picking up on the outer ear,
insert your needle into the 1st pearl stitch of each row (not the turn stitch). This will hide
the yarn along the back the best possible. If you pick up the turn stitch on the outer ear,
the contrast color yarn will be visible on the front and back of the ear

Continue working up the ear to the top and back down the other side. When you get to
the tip of the ear, tuck the two tails from when you finished the ear pieces into the inside
of the ear. Once you finish the ear, give those two ends a gentle tug if you want to adjust
the shape of the ear at the top. Tuck these tails inside the ear or cut if they are quite
long. Do not cut the two tails from the starting of each ear piece. If the contrast yarn is
showing along the back, gently pull the white stitches next to it to try and hide it. If the
pink is fully exposed on the back, you may be inserting your needle into the wrong spot.

When attaching the ears to the hat, use the contrast color tail to attach along that same
colored section of the ear and main color tail to stitch along the sides and back.

Repeat for the second ear, making sure they are placed evenly on the hat.

3 rnd: single crochet round the piece in yellow.
I use light color yarn by way of demonstration to show all the stitches.

crochet 3 parts for 1 wing:

part 1:
1 rnd: work in white
6 sc into MR = 6 sc
2 rnd: (1 sc, inc) 3t = 9 sc 3-6 rnds: 9 sc, cut yarn.
part 2:
1 rnd: work in white 6 sc into MR = 6 sc 2 rnd: (1 sc, inc) 3t = 9 sc
3-4 rnds: 9 sc, cut yarn.
part 3:
1 rnd: work in white
6 sc into MR = 6 sc
2 rnd: (1 sc, inc) 3t = 9 sc 3 rnd: 9 sc, do not cut yarn.

1 rnd: Continue crocheting the wing. To do this, we need to connect all the parts
together as shown in the photos. Work 5 sc across the second part + join part 3 and
work 4 sc across it, turn work and go on across this part – 5 sc + 4 sc across part 2 and
9 sc across part 1. Thus, having worked 27 sc you connected all the parts into one
piece. Continue working in the spiral.
2 rnd: 27 sc
3 rnd: (dec, 7 sc)3t = 24 sc
4 rnd: (dec, 2 sc)*6t = 18 sc
5 rnd: 18 sc
6 rnd: dec, 1 sc)6t = 12 sc
7 rnd: 12 sc
8 rnd: (dec, 1 sc)3t = 9 sc
9 rnd: fold in half and work through both halves: 4 sc, leave a yarn tail for sewing.
