● Any soft yarn that knits up with a nice drape and fits the gauge
will work fine.
● I love to use a machine washable yarn if possible - much easier
for the new parents!

Needle size
US 6 - 4.0 mm – DPNs and a 12 or 16” circular needle if you’d prefer
for the body of the hat (you’ll need the DPNs to decrease for
the top)

Approximately 80 yards (75 m) total
Size
14-15” head circumference (newborn to five month old baby,
depending on child)
Knitting Abbreviations
CO – cast on
PM - place stitch marker
(K2,P2)* - knit two stitches, purl two stitches and repeat for entire
round
(K9PM)* - knit nine stitches, place stitch marker and repeat for entire
round
(K7, K2tog)* - knit seven stitches, knit two stitches together and
repeat for entire round
Knitting Directions:
Cast On:
Using either a the circular needle or DPNs, CO 72 on size 6 needles
using your favorite method for a neat, stretchy cast on – long tail cast
on is highly recommended. Place a stitch marker and join to knit in
the round.
Brim:
Starting with the first round, (K2, P2)* for one inch (approximately
seven rounds).
Hat Body:
After you’ve completed approximately one inch of ribbed brim, begin
knitting the body of the hat by knitting every stitch for each round.
Continue knitting every stitch for three inches (hat is a total of four
inches tall including brim at this point).
Setting up for decreases: On the next round, (K9PM)* and repeat for
entire round. If you’re using the circular needle, you’ll find that as you
begin decreasing in the next section, the hat circumference will get too

small to easily stretch the length of the entire circular needle. Switch
to DPNs when necessary to finish the remainder of the hat.
Decreasing for Top of Hat:
Blocking this hat isn’t required, but does help the final look of your
stitches!
