Mule Surface Control Panel Chapter 1. Overview

1 OVERVIEW

The MULE Surface Control Panel (MCP003) is the surface system required to power and control the Mule
Downhole Tractor (MDT) and the Downhole Electric Cutting Tool (DECT). It contains a modem to
communicate with the tool and a power supply to run the tool.

A minimal amount of easily transportable equipment is required at the surface to operate the MDT or the
DECT. A single panel is connected to the wireline, the USB ports of a PC/Laptop and, if required, to the
power supply of the passenger tool system via the PASSENGER LINE IN connector (for certain Tractor
operations only, refer to MDT001 manual). The only additional connection is to a mains power supply
(240VAC 13A or 110VAC 20A).

Figure 1-1 MCP003 in transit case

The panel is a combined control panel and power supply. It has four controls:

• Mains ON/OFF switch.

• Voltage Output Control.
• Function switch.
• ARM Safety interlock button.

The voltage output control adjusts the voltage sent to the tool, used for tool operation. Power cannot be
applied by this control, unless:

• The voltage output control is at 0 (zero) and a safety micro-switch is activated.

• The ARM button is held until a load current is detected by the MCP003.

The function switch changes operation from either MDT or DECT only functions to the operation of the
passenger equipment.

Two LCD displays are provided to display the monitored Line Voltage and Line Current together with a
single LED to indicate when the PSU has reached its current limit (2.2A).

Other LEDs indicate the MCP003 Line Out status.

A PC/Laptop is connected at the rear of the MCP003 via the USB connector to provide communications
and control data to the MCP003 from a dedicated software package.

3.2 Functional Description

3.2.1 POWER SUPPLY

The High Voltage control assembly routes either the MCP003 internal PSU or the Passenger PSU to the
LINE OUT connector on the rear panel.

The HV PSU assembly is rated at 1000VDC, 2A output, but the actual voltage output level and the actual
current drawn will depend on:

• The position of the Voltage Output Control on the front panel.

• The load current drawn by the downhole tool in operation.

Copyright © 2012 - 2014 Sondex Wireline Limited - All rights reserved. Proprietary Information.
Document: MN-MCP003 Revision: B Created: 06 March 2014 3-2
MCP003
Mule Surface Control Panel Chapter 3. Theory of Operation

The load current will vary in accordance to the tool in operation, the work performed by the tool and the
time for which that current is drawn - especially when the tool is in a stalled condition.

Where the maximum current value reaches 2.2A (approximately) then the red CURRENT LIMIT LED will
illuminate. When this condition persists for more than a few seconds, the voltage output will limit the
current to 2.2A.

When the current limit is held for a substantial period of time the HV PSU will enter a protective shutdown
state triggered by an internal thermal sensor and will remove the power output until the MCP003 has
cooled. In this circumstance, the unit must be left with the power switched in the 1 (ON) position to
operate the fans to allow the PSU to cool. This can take more than 15 minutes. If the protective shutdown
was activated it is an indication that the load drawn was excessive or the fans air flow was prohibited.
Before the MCP003 is reset make sure the air flow to the fans is assessed and the excessive load is
reviewed.

3.2.2 MODEM & CONTROL ASSEMBLY

This Modem & Control Assembly is low voltage and contains the modem and the analogue circuitry used
to control the functions of the panel. Inputs to this assembly allow the MCP003 output voltage and
current to be monitored and this is then digitised and sent to the PC/Laptop.

The surface modem is similar to the downhole modem in its operation. However, control of output data is
from the surface PC/Laptop. Data is received at the surface and decoded by the modem and sent to the
PC/Laptop. The PC/Laptop can then send a command downhole to the MDT or DECT. The modem is
inhibited and switched out of circuit in PASSENGER mode and is connected to the wireline in SWITCH
Mode prior to the selection of PASSENGER Mode.

3.3 Function Switch Operation

The three position Function Switch allows three modes of operation:

• ON - MCP003 internal PSU and Modem connected to the

LINE OUT connector ONLY.
• SWITCH - MCP003 internal PSU disconnected from the
LINE OUT connector. PASSENGER LINE IN connector and
MCP003 Modem connected to LINE OUT.
• PASSENGER - MCP003 internal PSU and Modem
disconnected from the LINE OUT, PASSENGER LINE IN
connector directly connected to the LINE OUT which allows normal Passenger tool
operation.

3.3.1 ON POSITION

Note: This selection can be used for both Tractor or DECT operation.

When the Function Switch is in the ON position, the green ON LED will illuminate only when the ARM
button is depressed and the safety interlock is activated and the LINE OUT will be:

• Directly connected to the MCP003 internal power supply.

• Directly connected to the MCP003 internal uphole modem.

To connect the power from the MCP003 internal power supply to the LINE OUT connector, the Voltage
Output Control on the front panel must be set to 0 (zero) and the ARM button pressed and held. The
voltage can then be increased. As the output power is increased the red LINE POWER LED will illuminate
and the ARM button can be released.

When the output voltage reaches more than 55V and less than 10mA are being drawn by a tool
connected to the line, a safety ‘Low current cut out’ circuit will activate, the interlock will disable and the
MCP003 power supply and Uphole modem will be disconnected from the LINE OUT connector.

Document: MN-MCP003 Revision: B Created: 06 March 2014 3-3
MCP003
Mule Surface Control Panel Chapter 3. Theory of Operation

3.3.2 SWITCH POSITION

Note: This selection is for certain Tractor operations only.

When the Function Switch is in the SWITCH position, the green SWITCH LED will illuminate and the LINE
OUT will be:

• Directly connected to the PASSENGER LINE IN connector.

• Directly connected to the MCP003 internal uphole modem.
• Disconnected from the MCP003 internal power supply.

The red PASSENGER LED will illuminate when power is supplied by an external power supply via the
PASSENGER connector to the LINE OUT connector.

This scenario is used when the downhole Tractor is in STD configuration only and allows the operator to
control the downhole tractor electronics cartridge and activate the passenger relay system with the use
of the passenger PSU to power the tractor telemetry. It also enables the downhole modem to be switched
off before the PASSENGER position is selected on the MCP003 front panel that disconnects the MCP003
modem from the LINE OUT.

3.3.3 PASSENGER POSITION

Note: This selection is for certain Tractor operations only.

When the function switch is in the PASSENGER position, the green PASSENGER LED will illuminate and the
LINE OUT will be:

• Directly connected to the PASSENGER LINE IN connector ONLY.

• Disconnected from the MCP003 internal uphole modem.
• Disconnected from the MCP003 internal power supply.

ELECTRICAL HAZARD!
WARNING!
Refer to Section 2.2, Electrical Hazard.

This section contains oscilloscope plots of typical waveforms the operator can expect to see when the
tool is operated. The three DIAGNOSTICS connections (LINE, DATA and SYNC) at the back of the MCP003
can be used to either fault find or check the system operation:

• SYNC: The Data Carrier Detect (DCD). SYNC is high whenever there is data on the Line.
• LINE: Line AC coupled.
• DATA: All data on the Line (uphole and downhole).

Note: In each of the three figures below, the Red trace is the SYNC signal and the Blue trace is the LINE signal.

The plot in Figure 5-2 shows:

• CH1 = SYNC.
• CH2 = LINE.

The data is from a tool on a short cable (approximately 70). This repeats every 0.5 second.

Figure 5-2 Short cable signal - typical

The plot in Figure 5-3 shows:

• CH1 = SYNC.
• CH2 = LINE.

A long cable (approx. 220) is used. The signal is 600mV (peak-to-peak).
