VALIDATE
01 MAINTENANCE MODE

1 HMC : Validate maintenance mode ( HMC XSERIES BASED)

- Poweron the HMC

- Wait for :
BIOS/UEFI check,
raid adapter check,
- Then, the grub is displayed for only few seconds.
Press Escap many time to stop at Grub

- Press e to enter in edit mode

You are now able to edit the boot parameters :

Use arrow on the keyboard, and replace ro by rw single

To validate, and boot, press Crtl + X

You are now in maintenance mode.

Type the root password, which is by default


passw0rd for all HMC version (until v9)

Important note : The maintenance mode enable a


qwerty keyboard, if you have a physical azerty
keyboard (in France) type : pqsswàrd

- Poweron the HMC

- Once the petitboot id displayed, Press Escap many time to stop at petitboot menu.

- Use arrow to select (*) Hardware Management Console and press e to enter in edit mode

You are now able to edit the boot parameters :

Use arrow on the keyboard, and select OK

MODIFY A USER PASSWORD

3 HMC : Maintenance mode - Modify a user password

You are loggued with root, do not try anything stupid not listed in this document.

Important note : The maintenance mode enable a qwerty keyboard, if you have a physical azerty keyboard (in France) use bellow command to
switch in azerty :

# loadkeys fr

Use command passwd and specify the user name to modify. Most of the time, it should be hscroot (or CE, customer on DS8x000)

# passwd hscroot

Use exit command to boot the HMC normally.

4 HMC : Maintenance mode – Provide root access to hscroot

You are loggued with root, do not try anything stupid not listed in this document.

Important note : The maintenance mode enable a qwerty keyboard, if you have a physical azerty keyboard (in France) use bellow command to
switch in azerty :

# loadkeys fr

Make a copy of /etc/passwd with command :


# cp /etc/passwd /etc/passwd.ori

Create a test file :


Before modifying /etc/passwd, create a test file and validate that the Keyboard and emulation are good to go ahead.
As reminder, if you corrupt /etc/passwd, server will not start anymore.

# vi /home/hscroot/test
Write the word “bash” and save the file.
Verify the file : # cat /home/hscroot/test).

If you have any issue, escalate to support team.

4 HMC : Maintenance mode – Provide root access to hscroot

Use vi to edit /etc/passwd

# vi /etc/passwd

Modify the end of the line :


hscroot:x:600:600:HMC Super User:/home/hscroot:/bin/hmcbash

To become :
hscroot:x:600:600:HMC Super User:/home/hscroot:/bin/bash

Note : how to use vi

Once file is opened, move the line of hscroot.


Press $ to go at the end of the line.
Press x for 7 times to remove letter by letter hmcbash
Press a to add information, and write bash

Press one by one Escap : w q ! To save and exit.

Use cat /etc/passwd to verify the modification.


If it is OK, use exit command to boot the HMC normally.
