way through dull, overstuffed, committee-written textbooks, one chapter at a time. Children need to
be taught how to think, not just what to think. And some of those systems define individual schools
or classrooms. That means that it’s possible to make structural changes rather than waiting for our

their (the teachers) homework goals and make them as pleasant as possible for my child. Those
conditions as Carl Rogers taught us many decades ago, and now you never really think you’re okay.
But of course a principal’s ultimate obligation is to do what’s right by the children, to protect them
from harmful mandates and practices that persist not because they’re valuable but merely because
they’re traditional. Surely anyone who believes that homework is beneficial should be willing to test

some instructors will actually be forced to be more thoughtful about doing something other than just

symptom; a clue about what is happening in a child’s unique physiologic makeup. Also, it rarely
makes sense to give the same assignment to all students in a class because it’s unlikely to be
beneficial for most of them. Moreover, PARCC awarded Pearson a contract in January to develop a
new Technology Readiness Tool, which will support state education agencies to evaluate and
determine needed technology and infrastructure upgrades for the new online assessments. For
younger students, in fact, there isn’t even a correlation between whether children do homework (or
how much they do) and any meaningful measure of achievement. For example, praising children,
good job, I really like the way you dot dot dot sends the message that that love and excitement and
enthusiasm has strings attached. When that’s not true, they should be free to spend their after-school
hours as they choose. The value of a resource for parents is inversely proportional to the number of
times that contains the word behavior. Again, you know, my audience is filled with parents who are
raising kids who are in some way neurologically atypical. What's even more discouraging is that many
teachers still choose to use multiple choice exams despite having a plethora of more authentic
assessment alternatives such as performance assessments, portfolios, written response and personal,
