Assignment # 1

Calculate in the compression method?

1) A lattice floor girder S 275 steel grade, bear a reinforced concrete floor. Considered loads
applied on the floor are permanent dead load (6.75 kN/m 2 ), live load ( 3.5 kN/m2 ) and
wall load (1 kN/m2) . These loads are transferred to the truss as concentrated loads
applied in the nodes.
The distance between lattice girders is 3.4m; the nodes of the truss are fixed in the
perpendicular direction to the plane of the structure.
Design the tension members of the truss:
a) Square hollow sections (SHS), and welded connections for the members of the
structure.
b) HEA profiles in the upper and lower chords (horizontal members) and 2 UPN
channel profiles for the diagonal members. The diagonal members are bolted to gusset
plates,
which are welded to the HEA profiles in the upper and lower chords.

2) What tensile load can an angle steel section 70x 70 x 6mm carry with the connections
shown in Fig. below? Assume 18mm bolts with an edge distance of 50 mm and a pitch
of 75 mm, for bolted connections.
Use s 270 steel material.

3) State the main advantages of steel as structural material.

4) List the important factors that influence the mechanical properties of steel.
5) List the type of cross section that can be used as tension members.
6) List the different modes of failure in steel structure tension member.
7) What is shear lag effect?
