How does solar energy

work?
The sun is full of energy and solar energy comes from sunlight that reaches
earth! The amount of sunlight that reaches earth varies depending on
location, time of day, time of year, and weather conditions.

Solar cells turn light from the sun into electricity. Solar cells are also called
photovoltaic cells. ‘Photo’ is Latin for light and ‘voltaic’ means electricity.

Solar cells are put together to make solar panels sometimes called a “solar
array.” Solar panels are put on your home’s roof to collect sunlight and turn
it into power.

Solar energy is good for the planet! It does not create pollution.

How does wind energy

work?
Wind power is energy, such as electricity, that is generated directly from
the wind. It is considered a renewable energy source because there is
always wind on the Earth and we aren't "using up" the wind when we make
energy from it. Wind power also does not cause pollution.

A wind turbine works the opposite of a fan. Instead of using electricity to

make wind, a turbine uses wind to make electricity.

The wind turns the blades, which spin a shaft, which connects to a
generator and makes electricity. The electricity is sent through transmission
and distribution lines to a substation, then on to homes, businesses and
schools.
