2021-2023 Pediatric Training Program Pass Rates

February 2024

This report contains information about how programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical
Education (ACGME) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) performed on the general
pediatrics certifying examination. For each residency program listed within this report, the ABP has computed the 3-year
cumulative pass rate (2021-2023) for all first-time test takers who tested during that timeframe. US programs are listed
first by state abbreviation, followed by Canadian programs. Within state or province, programs are listed alphabetically by
city. For each program, this report provides the number of candidates who took the examination, the number who passed,
and the percent that passed. Caution should be exercised in interpreting the pass rates, especially for programs with fewer
than 25 examinees in three years. This report is updated annually.

Which residents are included in the calculation of a program's pass rate?

Candidates are included in the computation of a program pass rate if they meet all the following conditions:

1. They were first-time takers of 2021-2023 certifying examinations in general pediatrics (repeat takers are
excluded).

2. They completed residency training in general pediatrics within seven years from the date of their first certifying
examination.

3. The final year of training was in general pediatrics or a combined pediatric training program. The combined
training programs include medicine-pediatrics, pediatrics-psychiatry, pediatrics-emergency medicine,
pediatrics-physical medicine & rehabilitation, pediatrics-genetics, and pediatrics-anesthesiology.

Please note that for programs with fewer than five examinees during this timeframe (2021-2023), only the number of total
examinees is reported in order to protect the anonymity of examinees.

What are the limitations of the data?

Many factors influence a program's pass rate. Some are directly attributable to the program such as curriculum, faculty,
and resident selection criteria. Others relate to examinees and the examination and are beyond the control of the program.
Examinee factors include work habits during training and preparation for the examination, while examination factors
include the specific content sampled in any year's test.

Other limitations may also affect the precision of the data. First, programs with smaller numbers of examinees will have less
stable results. Second, if significant changes in the program have occurred within the three years, pass rates may not fully
reflect these changes.

If you have any questions or comments about this report, please email scoring@abpeds.org.
