Discuss the role of global climate change in ooding

(frequency and intensity) globally and locally

“Global Climate Change” is the change in climate which

takes place over a long period of time globally due to
various factors. This phenomenon has been observed in
the world in recent times because of the overdose of the
human activities which cause pollution and other
environmental disturbances.
Flooding is a kind of natural disaster which is the
over owing of water and drowns the land and causes
damage to life & property totally. It’s called a natural
phenomenon but is it really so ? Can it be labelled as a
man-made disaster ? We all know what major part our
own activities and climate change play in causing the
oods ,so isn’t it our doing as well?
Human Activities like deforestation, polluting the air/
water, burning fossil fuels, overusing the natural resources
and over population lead to Green house effect, which is
the increase in the temperature of the atmosphere
because of the increase of greenhouse gases like
methane and carbon dioxide in the air which trap the heat
in the surrounding.
As Global Climate Change is happening, there has been
change in weather and temperature which is increasing
and leading to heat waves all around the world . Due to
this ,the water cycle gets distorted and there is unusually
huge amounts of rainfall in an area which leads to
over owing of waterbodies and eventually oods.Heat
waves can also cause melting of glaciers and sea levels

to rise ,like the Pakistan Floods in 2022 happened due to
this major reason which led to 1/3rd of Pakistan
submerged in water(Magramo 2022) . The man -made
chemicals and gases such as CFCs(chloro uorocarbons)
and other ozone depleting substances have been trapped
in the atmosphere due to greenhouse ,they have lead to
ozone layer depletion and it has lead to melting glaciers in
the Antarctic and this has lead to huge disturbances in the
oceans and lead to tropical storms and rains all over the
world , this has also been a major reason for high intensity
oods.
Climate change can substantially change human exposure
to the ood hazard, but we don’t know by what magnitude
can it impact the frequency of oods under different climate
change models. For example, under one climate model
pattern (HadCM3) and future scenario (A1b), in 2050
approximately 450 million ood-prone people would be
exposed to a doubling of ood frequency, as would around
430 thousand km2 of ood-prone cropland. The total global
ood risk would increase by 187 %, compared to the
situation in the absence of climate change. (Arnell & Gosling
2014)
