The K-12 program that started in 2012 was a major reform in the Philippines' basic
education system. The K-12 education system in the Philippines was passed as a law
through the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, also known as Republic Act No.
10533. The Law aimed to improve the quality of basic Education in the country by
adding two more years to the existing 10-year basic education cycle, making it a 12-
year program. With the additional of two more years, school now includes kindergarten,
6 years of elementary, 4 years of junior high, and 2 years of senior high that aligns the
Philippines with education systems in other countries.
Globalization played a big part in the implementation of the K-12 curriculum. As the
Philippine economy opened to foreign trade and investment, there is growing need for
workers who can compete globally. The extra years of school and more comprehensive
courses aim to better prepare graduates for college or jobs, even jobs abroad. Matching
up with common education frameworks from other countries also makes transitions
easier when students go to college overseas or find work in other countries. English and
tech skills are integrated more so Filipino graduates can succeed in a global economy.
While primarily addressing the interests of Filipino students, the major education
reforms under the government’s K-12 policy are clearly driven by the demands of the
global market. This will assist the Philippines in making promising young people into
dynamic workers who can use opportunities available anywhere. We have still not seen
the full effects of this program, but globalization will probably highlight the significance of
quality education for every Filipino.
