Modern lifestyles are harmful to our health

Balwan, WK & Kour, S 2021, ‘Lifestyle Diseases: The Link between Modern

Lifestyle and Threat to Public Health’, ReseachGate, viewed 17 October 2023,

ReseachGate database.

Ghatge, SK 2023, ‘Impact of Modern Lifestyle on Health’, PriMera Scientific

Publications, Galgotias University, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India, vol. 2,

issue. 2, viewed 17 October 2023, PriMera Scientific Publications database.

In recent times, because of fast living, the modern lifestyle has changed the

way people lives their life and it affects negatively human health. The two

articles shed light on these detrimental effects. The first article ‘Impact of

Modern Lifestyle on Health’ by Suresh Kashinath Ghatge points out the various

metabolic diseases and millions of deaths around can be caused globally by

modern life. Similarly, the ‘Lifestyle Diseases: The Link between Modern

Lifestyle and Threat to Public Health’ article by Wahied Khawar Balwan and

Sachdeep Kour indicate the factors nowadays which can lead to Lifestyle

diseases, it is straightforward for a human to get chronic non-communicable

diseases with life threatening consequences.

In the article of Ghatge, the author studies an association between modern life

and the large number of deaths across the world and diseases which are

involve in metabolism. He highlights the unhealthy habits such as alcohol

2
consumption, substance use and smoking are the primary cause of various

metabolic and

mental health problems. Furthermore, the author provides evidence that 7

million deaths were directly caused by using tobacco, and 1.2 million deaths

were caused by non-smokers who were exposed to smoking in 2019. This

happened mostly among men in the Western-Pacific region. As well, alcohol

consumption was also a common element in 200 injuries and diseases.

Additionally, due to choices of modern lifestyle, the author states that one-

third of adults experienced sleep deprivation. Ghatge concludes that the

number of health problems is currently increasing due to contemporary

lifestyle and he also suggests some methods to improve health outcomes.

In contrast, the article ‘Lifestyle Diseases: The Link between Modern Lifestyle

and Threat to Public Health’ has varied information about the causes of lifestyle

diseases. The authors imply a link between an unhealthy lifestyle and the

consequences of this phenomenon. They define the notion of lifestyle disease

and indicate the causes. On top of that, the authors claim that Non-

Communicable Diseases cannot be attributed to only unhealthy habits, but also

to age, gender, and genes. In addition, they explain the concept, causes, and

solutions of four types of lifestyle diseases. To control the lifestyle diseases,

they suggest people should combine diet, physical activity and treatment.

3
To raise awareness about the disadvantages of modern lifestyle on health,

Ghatge’s article is beneficial. The author has presented a clear content

structure, uses understandable language and the writing style is well-organized

so the

readers can easily comprehend the conception. Besides, the strength of this

article is that he uses reputable sources to support his ideas and he also

provides two graphs for illustration. Unfortunately, the author does not show

the causes of the modern lifestyle. The readers would have understood broadly

if Ghatge had found out the roots of this phenomenon. However, this article is

still knowledgeable and valuable.

On the other hand, the article ‘Lifestyle Diseases: The Link between Modern

Lifestyle and Threat to Public Health’ reports more information than the

aforementioned article. In this research, because the language is not too

academic and there is a lot of detailed information, the readers can appreciate

it. Additionally, referencing the COVID-19 pandemic which is related to the

cause of a sedentary lifestyle in the conclusion is an impressive strength.

Nevertheless, some information is irrelevant in supporting the argument. Too

much data is provided and the article is too long so readers cannot follow and

remember the information. It would have been better if the authors had

dismissed unnecessary information and added a number of charts. Despite

this, the article is informative for helping people change their lifestyle due to

the detrimental effects of modern living.

4
In conclusion, both articles claim the choices of modern lifestyle can cause

chronic diseases. If people want to figure out some simple information about

how contemporary lifestyle affects human health, ‘Impact of Modern Lifestyle

on Health’ is the better option. By contrast, ‘Lifestyle Diseases: The Link

between

Modern Lifestyle and Threat to Public Health’ is suitable for those who want to

gain comprehension of this topic.
