 HOW IS SAP S/4HANA DIFFERENT FROM SAP ECC?
▪ SAP S/4HANA streamlines features and processes from SAP ECC to reduce costs and boost business efficiency. This means some features
have changed, while others have been replaced or combined into new features.

▪ Some of the key feature changes are as follows:-

1. FI and CO Merger : In SAP S/4HANA, FI and CO are part of a single table in ACDOCA, the Universal Journal. No reconciliation needed.

2. Material Number Extension: SAP S/4HANA gives you the option of extending the material number from 18 characters to 40 characters.
Bear in mind, though, if you turn on the extension you will have to adjust your custom code to the new material length of CHAR40.

3. Integrated Business Partners : SAP S/4HANA integrates customers and vendors into a unified master data object called business
partners. CVI, same number range & less data redundancy.

4. Real-time MRP : You can no longer run MRP at the storage level like in SAP ECC, but only at plant and area level. No wait like in ECC.

5. Mandatory Material Ledger : SAP S/4HANA, the ML is part of ACDOCA, so this frustration is now a thing of the past.

 NEW FEATURES IN SAP S/4HANA
▪ SAP S/4HANA includes a ton of new features to help you manage your data more effectively. Key features include the following:-

1. ACDOCA: The Universal Journal : As mentioned before, SAP S/4HANA combines several data modules into a single table called ACDOCA
(the Universal Journal). This includes asset accounting (AA), GL, ML, management accounting (MA), FI, and CO-PA. ACDOCA removes
many aggregate and index tables, which greatly reduces your data footprint. It's also a much more efficient system.

2. MATDOC Inventory Management : SAP S/4HANA introduces MATDOC, a new inventory management system that eliminates over 26
tables present in SAP ECC. Now, material documents are stored in MATDOC instead of MKPF or MSEG tables.

3. The SAP HANA Database: SAP S/4HANA is faster and more efficient than SAP ECC. Firstly, SAP S/4HANA reads data from the main
memory instead of the hard disk, so there are fewer data movements. Next, the tables in SAP S/4HANA are column-based instead of
row-based, so it only reads the relevant column in a query. It can also process different columns in parallel.

 MATERIAL MASTER NUMBER RANGE

o With SAP S/4HANA, on premise edition 2022, the maximum field length of the material number is extended from 18 to 40
characters. The material number field length extension was done with SAP S/4HANA and is available within the SAP S/4HANA, on-
premise edition 1511, SAP S/4HANA, cloud-edition 1511 and above.
o Extending the material number on the database means that the field length of the MATNR field on the database has been extended
from 18 to 40 characters. This has been done in all tables (and all fields within the tables) in which a material number can be
stored.
o Although the maximum length of the database field used to store the material number is now 40 Characters, the way how the material
number content is stored in the database field has not been changed compared to SAP Business Suite.
o The default setting, both after the move to SAP S/4HANA and for new installations, is that the extended material number functionality is
NOT activated. To use a material number with 40 characters, the customer needs to activate this functionality. The following settings are
required for that:
o Path to activate the number range functionality:-
1. IMG → Cross-Application Components → General Application Functions → Field length extension → Activate extended fields(FLETS)
T-Code FLETS (For the table maintenance the authorization group FLE [authorization object S_TABU_DIS] is required)
2. Execute transaction OMSL → Change Material No. Length field to 40

 MATERIAL FEATURE CHANGES IN SAP S/4HANA

▪ New material type “SERV” with product type 2 has been created for lean service procurement- SES.

▪ Accounting view has ML active.

▪ QA is gone
