Abraham Lincoln was an American lawyer and president, recognized for having abolished slavery.
He was born in Kentucky on February 12, 1809. He died on April 15, 1865 in Washington D.C,
assassinated by a secessionist. Abraham Lincoln began to study Law in a self-taught way, obtaining
the title in 1836. During this period, his involvement in politics earned him to be elected
representative for Illinois during 1834-1842. In 1842, he married Mary Todd, with whom he had
four sons. Abraham Lincoln’s presidency was marked by the Civil War. Shortly before he officially
took office in March 1861, a number of southern states declared their independence.
This declaration of independence was motivated by the slavery abolitionist policy of the
Republican Party. In total there were eleven states that separated from the Union and formed the
Confederate States of America.
Five days after the southern secessionists surrendered, Abraham Lincoln went to Ford’s Opera
House in Washington to see a theatrical performance with his wife Mary.
One of the actors playing that night was an ardent Confederate supporter and therefore a Lincoln
hater: John Wilkes Booth. Knowing that the president would attend the function, he planned his
assassination.
Without encountering any impediment or difficulty, Booth reached the president’s box. Stealthily,
he drew a gun, pointed it at his head and shot him in the back. Legend has it that soon after he
uttered the words Sic Semper tyrannis!: “This is how death always comes to tyrants.”
