1. GENERAL INFORMATION
This publication provides the specification details for the entire list of Wabtec lubricating oil and grease specification
numbers/part numbers that are required to be used in various Wabtec OHV equipment.
1.1. INTRODUCTION
This publication also provides the list of Wabtec approved sources of supply for each of these lubricant products.
Few best practices for proper storing and handling of these lubricant products are also provided. Also included in
this publication are the general gear oil (D50E35E) requirements or work practices that are needed to ensure that the
wheel motor performance requirements are successfully met in variable operational environments with regards to
temperature, severity and duty cycle of all potential mine sites.
All applicable local regulations, including any OEM test facility, mine, government, and industry rules for working
with high voltage must be followed. Required personal protective equipment, including but not limited to safety
shoes, high voltage gloves, and safety glasses must be worn.
Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death
WARNING
DANGER or serious injury.
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in minor
WARNING or moderate injury.
For successful truck operation and maintenance, the mine must provide:
3. Use only lubricating oils and greases from Wabtec approved source of supply, meeting the required Wabtec
lubrication specifications as mentioned in this publication. Failure to follow can result in reduced component
operation and may negatively impact life.
For optimal performance of Wabtec rotating equipment and its related bearing, gear
CAUTION and seal life, lubricants from Wabtec approved source of supply meeting the required
lubrication specifications as mentioned in this publication must only be used. Use of
any other unapproved lubricants which are not covered under this publication may
affect product warranty.
4. Inspection and maintenance per planned schedule as mentioned in the planned maintenance manual, and
maintain adequate records of these activities.
5. For maximum life and effectiveness of the lubricants, always store the lubricants in a clean, cool and dry envi-
ronment for a limited amount of time not extending beyond as advised by the lubricant supplier. Ideally the
lubricants must be stored in a lube room.
6. Avoid bulk storage of new gear oil D50E35E barrels/drums in vertical position outdoor without any shelter or
protection. This practice allows the rain water, snow and other airborne contaminants to collect on top of these
containers, submerging the bungs. When these containers are exposed to variation in temperature, will cause
these barrels/drums to breathe. That is, during day sunlight, the barrel/drum expels air from inside of the barrel/
drum head space and at night, barrel/drum creates a suction pulling the water inside the barrel/drum that is
collected on the top of these barrel/drum and is decanted to bottom of these containers. Hence, when storing
new gear oil in bulk outside, always store them in horizontal position with the bungs at horizontal line and cover
the containers with tarpaulins to prevent contamination of water/dirt.
7. Label/tag consistently all the three key elements associated to a lubricant (lubricant storage containers, lubri-
cant transfer or dispensing or handling devices and the Wabtec equipment where that lubricant is applied) and
use them dedicatedly to handle or transfer that lubricant only to avoid cross-contamination and wrong lubri-
cant fill/top-ups.
8. Provide sealable, cleanable, labeled/tagged, filling/top-up containers designed for handling and transfer of
lubricants which are easy to clean and help in avoiding airborne contamination. These should be dedicatedly
used to handle one lubricant only to avoid cross-contamination and wrong lubricant fill/top-ups.
2. Never overfill the lubricants, too much lubrication can be as harmful as too little.
3. Clean equipment covers before they are removed to perform inspection and maintenance.
4. Clean the lubricant container seal caps and surrounding container surfaces before removing the seal cap.
5. All filling/top-up containers and transfer equipment such as pumps, hoses, top-up containers, transfer contain-
ers, filter carts, funnels, oil suction tool for taking the oil samples, grease guns etc. should be dedicatedly used to
handle one lubricant only as labeled/tagged and should be kept clean between use.
6. After installation of the wheel motor to the truck or after replacement of parts/sub-assemblies of the wheel
motor mounted on the truck, operate the truck for at least 30 minutes, unloaded and at low speed (10 mph or
less).
7. The seal caps/bungs/lids of the lubricating barrels/drums/containers/bulk storage tanks should always be kept
closed to prevent contamination. The bulk storage tanks should be installed with breathers which have the effi-
ciency of at least to that of the filter element to avoid contamination of dirt and water.
Sources of supply for various lubricant products used in the Wabtec equipment are listed below in this publication
with oil company brand name and designation. Specifications for these lubricants have been compared to the perti-
nent Wabtec specification and have been found to comply. They may be considered as Wabtec approved sources of
supply.
NOTE: The lubricant listing in this publication is by no means to be considered exclusive. Other lubricants from
other oil companies may also comply with the Wabtec specification. It is the responsibility of the prospective
purchaser and the supplier to obtain approval from Wabtec OHV representatives prior to use of such lubricants
in the Wabtec OHV equipment. Approval shall be based on the results of performance testing and field testing.
Proper storage and handling of lubricants is the key for maximizing the life and effectiveness of a lubricant being
used in the Wabtec equipment. Properly stored and handled lubricants will intern allow Wabtec equipment meet the
performance requirements to their fullest capacity in variable operational environments. Poor lubricant storage and
handling practices will result in degradation of lubricants for several reasons, like exposure to extreme tempera-
tures, dirt /water contamination and storage period extending beyond recommended by the lubricant supplier. Con-
tamination from dirt/rain water/snow, large temperature variations and high temperature storage methods
shortens the life of the lubricant. Lower grade mineral oils stored, degrade faster than highly refined mineral oils and
synthetic oils. Lubricants stored in poor condition metal drums degrade faster than those stored in plastic contain-
ers. Outdoor stored lubricants, degrade faster than stored indoor. To avoid deterioration, lubricants should be stored
in clean, dry place preferably in lube room to prevent any airborne contamination at a reasonably constant, moder-
ate temperature for a limited amount of time not extending beyond as advised by the lubricant supplier.
Though most of lubricant manufacturers ensure cleanliness in the process of making of the gear oil and storing it at
their manufacturing site, the same rigor of maintaining cleanliness of the gear oil is not followed by various national,
regional and local distribution channels involved in handling, storing, packaging and dispensing of the gear oil
(D50E35E) to the end user. By the time the oil arrives at the end user's site, it would have been already too dirty for
use without filtering. Only few lubricant manufacturers commit to maintain purity and integrity of their products
between blend plant and the end user. Hence, the end users should request the lubricant supplier with certificate of
analysis or COA containing the physical, chemical and performance specifications along with cleanliness level of the
new gear oil (D50E35E) purchased and ensure that they are randomly sampled and tested prior to being used in the
wheel motor. Whenever the concentration of solid contaminants in the lubricant exceeds the target limits for allow-
able contaminants, the lubricant should be filtered before use. Also, ensure to check the labeling and any marked
variation from the product's normal color, smell or consistency should be reported to the lubricant supplier. If gear oil
(D50E35E) is dispensed directly from a stationary bulk oil tank, the outlet lines must have filters installed via quick
couplers enabling the new gear oil (D50E35E) to be filtered to an ISO 4406 cleanliness standard of -/15/13 or better
before using them in the wheel motors. Always use dedicated pumps, transfer carts, top-up/filling container for fill-
ing/top-up of the wheel motor.
1.7. CARE TO BE TAKEN WHILE STORING THE GEAR OIL DRUMS/BARRELS OUTDOOR
With limited space inside a mine area, there may not always be room for new oil drums/barrels storage indoor.
When storing new gear oil in bulk outside, always store them in horizontal position or on sloping racks under shelter
with the bungs at horizontal line and cover the containers with tarpaulins to prevent contamination of water/dirt to
protect from extremes of temperature and ingress of dirt/water. Ingress of dirt/water happen when gear oil drums/
barrels are stored vertically outside uncovered without any shelter or protection, are directly exposed to sunlight and
where significant temperature variations are common. This practice allows the rain water, snow and other airborne
contaminants to collect on top of these containers, submerging the bungs. When these containers are exposed to
variation in temperature, will cause these barrels/drums to breathe. That is, during day sunlight, the barrel/drum
expels air from inside of the barrel/drum head space and at night, barrel/drum creates a suction pulling the water
inside the barrel/drum that is collected on the top of these barrel/drum and is decanted to bottom of these contain-
ers. This can occur in drums that have never been opened. Once the water is in the oil, it begins to settle to the bot-
tom of the drum and raise the fluid level in the drum. As this process continues, more and more water is
accumulated at the bottom of the barrel, deforming the barrel and pushing oil out of the bungs. The risk of contami-
nation is greatly increased when lubricants are decanted or dispensed outdoors. Condensation or water ingress is
more likely when a drum is only partially full. Water on top of the drum can also cause rusting, and the obliteration of
markings, which could result in the wrong oil being used. First-in/first-out method should be followed and should
only store the minimum possible quantities necessary.
Accidental wrong lubricant fill/top-ups or cross-contamination of the lubricants can be eliminated by having a fool-
proof process of identifying and labeling/tagging all the three key elements associated with a lubricant (lubricant
containers, lubricant transfer or dispensing devices and the Wabtec equipment where that lubricant is applied) per
ISO 6743 standard which classifies lubricants, industrial oils and related products (class L) - classification. These tag-
ging/labeling of the lubricants should be consistent throughout and should be used dedicatedly. This can be done by
labeling/tagging the lubricant bulk storage tanks, barrels and containers. Then, labeling of lubricant filling or transfer
or dispensing devices such as pumps, hoses, top-up containers, filter carts, funnels, oil suction tool for taking the oil
samples, grease guns, etc. should be done. Finally, labeling of the Wabtec equipment must be done where these
lubricants are applied. Once identified and labeled, these should be used only for that purpose only. This will avoid
mistakes of filling or topping-up of wrong lubricants resulting in cross-contamination of lubricants by another
incompatible lubricant.
Grease drums should be stored vertically, slightly tilted and the plugs/bungs turned suitably to prevent any possibil-
ity of water getting into the drums. Grease tubes and drums are often opened and used over a longer period,
attracting airborne contaminants such as lint and dust more often. Secure the grease tubes and grease guns that
will be re-used later in a sealable washable container. Once opened, all grease containers should be stored with lids
in place to avoid contamination. Grease guns should be regularly cleaned and inspected for proper functioning and
an annual calibration should be performed. This calibration will ensure the same volume of grease is still being dis-
pensed with one shot as when the gun was new. Use dedicated grease gun with proper labeling for each type of
grease to avoid cross-contamination of the grease.
During overhaul or repairs of Wabtec rotating equipment, after the inspection of good bearings for reuse, dip the
good bearing parts in a light mineral oil (SAE-10 or SAE 10W or higher SAE grades) heated to 90°C (194°F) to prevent
corrosion before assembly. If the bearing is not to be mounted immediately, wrap it in a suitable moisture preventa-
tive paper. Keep the bearing sets together. Do not interchange parts of one bearing set with parts of another bearing
set.
3. FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
Not applicable.
Although D50E35E synthetic base, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) VG 680 gear oil typically has
low pour points, a wheel motor should not be operated if the gear case oil temperature is lower than that of the pub-
lished pour point of the product being used. Trucks that have been parked in environments where the gear case oil
temperature might reach such levels would need to be artificially heated before operation and/or movement.
Wheel motors should not be operated/moved/rotated unless the gear oil viscosity
CAUTION pour point temperature has been achieved.
Stored bulk gear oil should always be stored in such a way that rain water, snow and other airborne contaminants
cannot collect on barrel/container/drum/bulk storage tank surfaces such that subsequent use can contaminate the
gear oil. They should be stored in clean and dry place to avoid contamination and corrosion of containers which
would occur in damp conditions. If the gear oil barrels/ drums are stored outside, they should be stored in horizontal
position with bunks at horizontal line and covered using tarpaulins to protect from extremes of temperature condi-
tions and contamination. The seal caps/bungs/lids of the gear oil barrel/container/bulk storage tank should always
be kept closed to prevent contamination. All D50E35E gear oil barrel/containers/ bulk storage tanks, fill pipes and off
take pipes must be properly labeled/tagged consistently and should be dedicated for handling of D50E35E gear oil
only to avoid cross-contamination. Cross-contamination of gear oil from such fluids can cause damage to the wheel
motor components or reduced life cycle.
All filling/top-up containers and gear oil transfer equipment such as pumps, hoses, top-up containers, transfer con-
tainers, filter carts, funnels, oil suction tool for taking the oil samples etc. should be labeled/tagged consistently and
should be dedicated for filling/liquid transfer of the synthetic based ISO viscosity grade 680 (D50E35E) gear oil only
to avoid cross-contamination when handling and topping-up/filling the wheel motor. They should always be kept
clean between use. It is not acceptable to use filling/liquid transfer equipment such as pumps and/or hoses and/or
containers and /or oil suction tool for taking the sample etc. used to transfer other typical mine truck fluids (hydraulic
oil, coolant, diesel fuel, etc.) to transfer and fill the Wabtec wheel motors. For filling/ top-up or transfer of the gear oil
always use sealable cleanable top-up containers which help to prevent particle ingression into new gear oils being
topped-up. The top-up containers, funnels etc. should be sealed into a zip-lock type re-sealable plastic bag when not
in use, to be properly labeled to prevent any cross-contamination of different oils when refilling the containers. Keep
the containers clean on the inside and outside, and store the containers in a nearby cabinet when not in use.
Also, if new gear oil (D50E35E) from a new barrel/container or from a bulk storage tank is partially used to top-up or
fill the wheel motor and later this partially empty gear oil barrel/container/bulk storage tank is stored for a long
period before using it once again to top-up or fill the wheel motor, then in such cases ensure the quality of the gear
oil that is, ensure that the stored gear oil in that barrel/container is the correct gear oil (D50E35E) that is intended to
be used to top-up or fill the wheel motor or is it accidentally misplaced or cross-contaminated with a different/
incompatible lubricant. All the storage containers and dispensing devices must be labeled/tagged consistently for
their use and should be used only for that purpose only to avoid cross-contamination of a lubricant by another
incompatible fluid.
Before filling or topping-up of the wheel motor it is important to ensure that the quality of the new gear oil is meeting
the Wabtec specification D50E35E and is also meeting the cleanliness level of -/15/12 code per ISO 4406: 1999 and
that you are not filling or topping-up a wrong gear oil or a contaminated gear oil or a degraded gear oil. This is
because sometimes the lubrication labeling/tagging would have been misplaced or mislabeled accidentally by
human agency at lubricant manufacturing plant or at distributor or at the mine site. There is possibility that a lubri-
cant could accidentally be introduced into the wrong package or a package might be mislabeled. Refer to section
1.8., LUBRICANT TAGGING/LABELLING TO AVOID WRONG LUBRICANT FILL OR TOP-UPS for lubricant tagging/labeling
to avoid cross-contamination or wrong lubricant fill or top-up mistakes. Also, after a long period of storage, the
stored gear oil might have been contaminated or degraded. If in doubt, always conduct an oil sample analysis
before topping-up/filling of the wheel motor.
Also, before filling or topping-up the wheel motor, the gear case sump top surface must be cleaned using a clean
lint-free rag prior to removing gear case fill cap. Once the gear case fill cap is removed, clean the gear case edges
around the fill cap opening and then top-up/fill the wheel motor to correct volumes/gear oil levels as recommended
in the planned maintenance manuals. Any accidental gear oil spillage should be cleaned up. Also, regularly monitor
and maintain the gear oil levels in the wheel motors per recommended in the planned maintenance manuals during
operation.
NOTE: Gear oil must be dumped when cross-contaminated with hydraulic oil or any other low viscosity grade
gear oils. Filtering will not separate the cross-contaminated gear oil.
Do not overfill the wheel motor with lubricant D50E35E gear oil. Too much of
CAUTION lubrication can be as be harmful as too little. Overfilling may cause seal damages and
leaks during operation.
When performing flushing of the wheel motor, ensure that the gear oil meets cleanliness level of -/15/12 code per
ISO 4406: 1999. A brand-new wheel motor which is dispatched from Wabtec facility, will be flushed using D50E35E
synthetic based, ISO VG 680 gear oil, until the reading shows a cleanliness level of -/15/12 code per ISO 4406: 1999.
After flushing, the gear oil is drained from the wheel motor and drain plug installed before shipping. Hence care to be
taken in the field to prevent contamination of the wheel motor gear case and its contents when filling/topping-up
with new D50E35E gear oil.
Also, whenever a wheel motor comes from a service shop after undergoing overhaul or necessary repair, ensure that
the wheel motor is flushed in the service shop using the D50E35E synthetic based, ISO VG 680 gear oil to meet the
cleanliness level of -/15/12 code per ISO 4406: 1999. If flushing is not done at the service shop, conduct the flushing
of the wheel motor on the truck before putting the wheel motor into operation. Refer to motorized wheel service
manual for flushing procedures at service shop or refer to motorized wheel field service manual for flushing proce-
dure at mine site. Flushing operation to be continued until the gear oil cleanliness level of -/15/12 code per ISO 4406:
1999 is met. After completing the wheel motor flushing operation, drain the gear oil from the wheel motor by remov-
ing the drain plug. Clean the drain plug and apply sealer #2 Permatex® (487A806P33) to the threads and install the
drain plug to the gear case sump. Remove and clean the gear case magnetic pipe plugs for any metal debris. Inspect
if the center magnet portion of magnetic plugs are not missing. Apply sealer #2 Permatex® (487A806P33) to the
threads of the magnetic pipe plugs and install them to the planet cover and sun pinion cover. Refer to Wabtec OHV
drive systems, planned maintenance manual for more details on cleaning the magnetic plugs. Once the wheel
motor is installed to the truck, fill the wheel motor with new D50E35E gear oil which is pre-filtered to meet the clean-
liness level of -/15/12 code per ISO 4406: 1999 and then operate the truck for at least 30 minutes, in unloaded con-
dition and at low speed (10 mph or less) before putting it in operation.
Once the wheel motor is in operation, conduct regular wheel motor gear oil D50E35E sampling and analysis as men-
tioned in the Wabtec OHV drive systems, planned maintenance manuals, to ensure the gear oil meets the cleanli-
ness level of -/18/13 code per ISO 4406: 1999 to allow the wheel motor to meet the performance requirements in
varying mine environment. If the gear oil is not meeting this cleanliness levels, then it should be filtered or replaced
with new gear oil. The oil sampling process must be done in a consistent timely interval to allow proper interpreta-
tions of the test results. Irregular oil sampling intervals or failure to interpret the test results may lead to unexpected
failure or expensive overhaul costs. To make oil sample history more readily understood, a spreadsheet format is
suggested in planned maintenance manual. In an electronic version, the oil sample history can be e-mailed to
Wabtec product service representatives or the truck manufacturer for analysis.
When conducting regular wheel motor gear oil D50E35E sampling and analysis, take attention to details of process
and cleanliness. Sampling bottles and all other affected material must be kept clean to avoid gear oil sample and
wheel motor gear case and its contents from getting contaminated. Consistency in sampling process steps is key to
meaningful analysis. Samples should be physically taken the same way each time and at the same type of opera-
tional timing to filter out variation other than that of the oil itself. To ensure complete oil analysis, tests for viscosity,
suspended element identification, and particle size and particle counts should be performed on the gear oil sample.
This will allow a complete analysis of the gear oil for identification and monitoring of the critical wear components in
the motorized wheel.
The particle counts and particle size test is a cleanliness test and rated as an ISO code or standard. This test con-
ducted in accordance to ISO 4406:1999 standard gives a range code corresponding to the number of particles per
milliliter in three size ranges of the particles in the gear oil. That is, particles greater than 4 microns, particles greater
than 6 microns and particles greater than 14 microns. The element identification is not part of this test, just the size
and quantity of the contaminants in the oil. Refer to topics on take gear case oil sample, analyze gear case oil sam-
ple, change/filter the gear case oil and flushing the gear box explained in the Wabtec OHV drive systems, planned
maintenance manuals.
For more information about Wabtec specification D50E35E, refer to section 5.5., WABTEC SPECIFICATION D50E35E.
Be careful when using lubricants. Obey the lubricant manufacturer instructions and
WARNING the local regulations. Generally, lubricants are flammable, poisonous and skin
irritants. Make sure that there is a good flow of air through the work area. Do not
inhale the fumes directly. Do not smoke in the vicinity of these lubricants. Avoid
bringing these lubricants near to the flame, spark or any other heat source. Use
appropriate protective clothing, goggles and gloves whenever handling the
lubricants. If you get any of these lubricants on your skin or in your eyes, flush it away
with a flow of clean water. If you get any of these lubricants in your mouth, get

Lubricants to be applied to the specified parts with the applicable lubricant only as
CAUTION specified in this publication or specific service manuals or planned maintenance
manuals. Failing to do so can cause under-performance of the equipment and impact
life of the equipment. For optimal performance of Wabtec rotating equipment and its
related bearing, gear and seal life, lubricants from Wabtec approved source of supply
meeting the required lubrication specifications as mentioned in this publication must
only be used. Use of any other unapproved lubricants which are not covered under this
publication may affect product warranty.

NOTE: Lubricating the O-ring helps protect the O-ring from damage by abrasion, pinching, or cutting during
installation. It helps to seat the O-ring properly, speeds up assembly operations. An additional benefit is the pro-
tection that the lubricant gives as a surface film. It also helps protect O-ring from degradation by atmosphere,
and its presence helps extend the service life of the O-ring. Use of lubricant on O-ring is essential in pneumatic
applications requiring dynamic service and in vacuum applications lubricants help reduce the leakage rate by
filling the asperities of the metal.

NOTE: Wabtec specification D50E35E is a synthetic based, ISO viscosity grade 680 gear oil.
Refer to Table 5 for the properties and the supplier information Wabtec specification D50E35E.
The D50E35E synthetic based, ISO VG 680 gear oil has been developed to better qualify the oil characteristics to
industry standard tests, to ensure that all wheel motor performance requirements are successfully met, in variable
operational environments with regards to temperature, severity and duty cycle of all potential mine sites. Hence, it is
mandatory to use D50E35E synthetic based, ISO VG 680 gear oil from Wabtec approved source of supply and meet-
ing the Wabtec specification D50E35E mentioned in this publication, in the AC wheel motors starting from 200T to
higher tonnage capacity. For selection of Gear Oil for DC Wheel Motor models & below 200T AC Wheel motor models,
refer to GEAR OIL NOTE preceding the Table 5. Also, the new D50E35E gear oil should be pre-filtered to meet the
cleanliness level of -/15/12 code per ISO 4406: 1999 before topping-up/filling the wheel motor. If in doubt, always
conduct an oil sample analysis to ensure the quality of the gear oil before topping-up/filling of the wheel motor.
Although not required, it is recommended to use D50E35E synthetic based ISO viscosity grade 680 gear oil in all
other wheel motors, contact Wabtec product service representatives for use of lower grade synthetic gear oils on all
other wheel motors. Also, always maintain correct gear oil levels in the wheel motor per recommended in the
planned maintenance manuals during operation.
Do not use lesser viscosity grade gear oils in the AC wheel motors starting from 200T
CAUTION to higher tonnage capacity. Synthetic based, ISO viscosity grade 680 gear oil, from
Wabtec approved source of supply and meeting the Wabtec specification D50E35E, as
mentioned in this publication is the only required gear oil to be used in the AC wheel
motors starting from 200T to higher tonnage capacity to allow the wheel motors to
successfully meet their performance requirements and their related bearing, gear and
seal life in all approved applications. Use of lower viscosity grade gear oils or from
unapproved source of supply in the AC wheel motors starting from 200T to higher
tonnage capacity could affect warranty coverage.
Lower viscosity gear case oils or solvents should not be used in the wheel motor
CAUTION during flushing operation due to the residual oil or solvent remaining in the gear case
sump resulting in misleading oil samples after flushing. Use only synthetic based, ISO
VG 680 gear oils, from Wabtec approved source of supply and meeting the Wabtec
specification D50E35E as mentioned in this publication, for wheel motor flushing to
avoid cross-contamination of gear case oil.
Do not overfill the wheel motor with lubricating D50E35E gear oil. Too much of
CAUTION lubrication can be as be harmful as too little. Overfilling may cause seal damages and
leaks during operation.
Refer to the section 4., GENERAL GEAR OIL (D50E35E) REQUIREMENTS OR WORK PRACTICES for general gear oil
(D50E35E) requirements/work practices.
GEAR OIL NOTE: For all DC Wheel Motor models & below 200T AC Wheel motor models, the thickest viscosity (ISO
VG 680) gear oil should always be used unless local temperatures routinely maintain temperatures below the
exact pour point of the selected approved lubricant product. Before applying the lesser viscosity grade gear oils
for DC wheel motor models & below 200T AC wheel motor models, contact Wabtec Product Service representa-
tives for assistance and as well to get approvals. For additional questions/details related to Gear Oils, contact
Wabtec product service representatives for assistance.
