REPAIR PROCEDURE FOR WELD CRACKS IN UNDERSIDE OF END BEAMS

3/15/06

1. Remove the paint two inches from the weld joint.

2. Determine the full length of the crack using magnetic particle testing. Note:
Care should be taken to repair all of the crack or the crack may redevelop.

3. If the crack is also in the base metal of the main beam use the attached
“Repair Procedure For Cracks In Base Metal (Partial)”

4. Remove the existing weld metal by arc gouging and/or grinding. See Sketch 1
for weld details.

5. Prepare the area for a 6 to 7 mm [1/4 to 9/32 inch] groove weld with a 1 mm
to 2 mm (1/32 to 1/16 inch) land in the base metal to avoid a burnout when
welding.

6. If the crack does not run the entire length of the weld, continue to gouge
and/or grind 50 mm [2”] past the end of the crack.

7. If arc gouging is used, remove by grinding all of the black carburized surface
from the gouge prior to welding.

8. Clean and remove all slag in weld joint.

9. Reweld the joint. The base metal should be preheat to 70 degrees F

minimum. Start by adding a small root weld along the entire length of the
prepared area.

10. All welding should be performed as per AWS D1.1 utilizing E7018 welding rod
for SMAW or E71-T1 welding wire for FCAW or equal.

11. Grind the weld smooth.

12. Magnetic particleor dye pentrant test the new weld.

13. Paint the exposed areas.
