DISCUSS
Work in groups. Discuss the position of each of the city leaders about
how to use tax dollars and decide which one you agree with. Share your
positions with the class.

reduce traffic. That will slow down pollution.
2. Ms. Chung: If we spend tax money on more and better public
transportation, people won’t have to drive as much and will use less energy.
3. Ms. White: The city needs more green space. Let’s use tax dollars to
create parks and plant trees to clean the air and provide shade.
4. Mr. García: The city should invest in sun and wind energy. It costs more,
but it does less damage to the environment.

A. Make cards for the words from Chapters 19 and 20 that were new to you
when you started the unit. Include target words and words that you wrote
on page 236.
B. Review your new cards one time with a partner. As your partner
quizzes you, he or she will put your cards into two groups: one group
for the words you remembered and one group for the words you didn’t
remember. Review the words you didn’t remember a second time.
C. Add your cards from Units 1–9 to the new cards. Now look through all
your cards. Choose twenty to thirty words that you think are the most
useful for you in real life. For the next three days, review these words
twice a day. Review the second group of cards (the remaining words)
once a day. Remember to change the order of the cards in each group
before you review them. Each time you review your cards, make a
check (✓) in the chart.
D. After three days, put the two groups back together, change the order, and
review all of the cards with your partner in class. How many words did
you remember this time?
E. Go back to the vocabulary list at the beginning of each chapter. What did
you learn about the target words? Add your numbers to the lists.
