Past Perfect Practice

Complete the following sentences with the PAST PERFECT, using the regular past
participles of the verbs in parentheses. Highlight the verbs in Simple Past.

Example: The fire ___had reached____ (reach) the roof when the firemen arrived.
1. When I arrived at the cinema, the film had started (start).
2. They had lived (live) in Europe before they went to Asia.
3. The students did the activity after the teacher had explained (explain) it.
4. Nobody had visited (visit) the tribe before the explorers arrived.
5. Before they arrived at the hospital, they had paid (pay) the taxi driver.

Complete the following sentences with the PAST PERFECT, using the irregular past
participles of the verbs in parentheses. Highlight the verbs in Simple Past.

1. Laura broke her arm after she had fallen (fall) from her bike.
2. We had already eaten (eat) when we left the house.
3. The children had done (do) their work, so the teacher was happy.
4. He was late for the plane because he had forgotten (forget) his passport.
5. She had broken (break) the glass and cut her hand.
6. The girl had already bought (buy) the shoes when her mother gave money.
7. Dave had never been (be) in love before he met Karen.

Combine the two actions to create one sentence. Put the verbs in the correct tense.
