o It is a common tendency to describe the present as “modern.

” Being
modern means being up to date and technologically advanced. Often, being
modern is equated with being contemporary. Art that is new or current is
also often referred to as “modern” as opposed to “traditional” or
“conservative”. In other words, in everyday language, the terms are
interchangeable.
• The first difference between the contemporary and modern is historical
and chronological.

the American colonial period and the Post-war

• For instance, National Artist, Arturo Luz, managed to
paint well into the twenty-first century
• However, the "Historic Overview" table for his work,
shown in Figure 1.1, is linked to the modern style of the
late 20th century with the hardline abstract style of his
paintings.
• As a result, the word “contemporary” is a complex one,
and its meaning shifts depending on the circumstances.
The Majority of painters across several age groups have created something synonymous
with Modern Art.

• Victorio Edades, a popular Filipino artist, is credited for launching the contemporary
art trend that opposed the neoclassical standards which were prevalent during his
period.
• Neoclassical style idealizes and represents life as accurately as possible which can be
seen in the works of National Artists like Fernando Amorsolo and Guillermo Tolentino.
• Modern artists focus on rendering unrealistic imagery rather than mundane scenery.
• Modern art is considered “traditional” in comparison with contemporary artworks.
• Modern art styles are now a part of art school curriculum and didactic in nature.

• Contemporary art is a creation of the vision of an artist that is created in the moment
and keeps on updating.
• Contemporary art today can be considered as “academic” or “traditional” at some point.
